Another Wildly Snowy Day With Near-Blizzard-Like Conditions!!!

Definitely a fantastic Duncan day!

Definitely a fantastic EVERYTHING day!

What more can we say? Big bunches of freshly falling
snow over an immaculate groomed base, for sure,
an ideal that many recreational skiers would aspire to...

Now then, here’s an interesting Local’s Chair Lift story:

“We went to Whistler for a 4 day quick trip, but after
the first day it rained so hard over the whole Mountain
they ended up closing operations because the ENTIRE
Mountain was coated with 2 inches of ice. They told us
there were no prospects of much reopening within at least
a couple of days, so then they suggested “Axe Throwing”
or “Polar Bear” Swimming. We were so frustrated we left after
the 1 day of skiing and flew straight back to Montreal so we
could get to Tremblant.”

Smart move...

Otherwise here at very snowy Tremblant, the total snow
depth just keeps on wracking up and we’ve had a string
of warm, easy days with great conditions across all skill
levels, groomed and au natural.

The Only Question Is...

Where are YOU?

(Please Note: We are at the attachment limit
for this post, so more complete follow-up
in the morning, however we respectfully
submit that conditions are so excellent
that you should not check back in the
morning, instead, toss your gear in the
vehicle now, then leave really early before
anyone else is up.)

Very Big Snowfall In A Very Short Time!

Despite the obvious snow-filtered challenges for photography...

Excellent Fun On Versant Soleil “Toboggan”,

A normal perception of the daily snowfall statistic would be
as occurring over the full 24 hours, however in this case,
the bulk of it came in about a 5 hour span during Open Hours,
so there was a significant intensity that at times seemed
rather blizzard-like. Additionally, there were significant wind
shaping and drifting characteristics.

The new snow is a construction-grade, super-packable, and
very dense form. Considering the weather forecast yesterday
indicated rainy bits, this was a hugely different, very positive
benefit, as within our experience, there was not a single drop
of rain anywhere, and it was all snow, all day. The density and
internal humidity did require some extra muscle through some
of the thicker bits, but it was all wonderfully smooth to descend
on, especially where it was undisturbed.

The closing hours were simply magical. The traffic was
non-existent, and despite that fact that it was snowing
so heavily picture taking was nearly futile, it was just
run after run of what you can see above, which we managed
to capture in a very brief, momentary gap in the atmospheric
conditions over Versant Nord/North Side trail # 72, P’tit Bonheur.

Wherever it is freshly groomed into the base, it is going to be
a wonderful new strata layer of grippy performance that will
hold excellent edge-sets on steeper Expert terrain, and silky
smooth glide on Beginner and Intermediate terrain.

T360 Mini Trail Review,
Versant Nord/North Side,
Trail # 94, La Griffe.

La Griffe is a local favourite located just off the
top of the Expo Quad peak, by exiting off the
chair to hard right and curving around at
almost 180 to descend to its entrance that
is shared with the other trails as you see above.

In these specific conditions, we have described the
new snowfall as “bankable” in the sense that an
angled ski or board will easily generate a bank
of snow to support turning forces without skidding
off-track. You can see that below where with one
single pressing movement, the ski has been able
to create an angled platform underneath its running
surface. In this case, it made the steepness of the
pitches super-easy to navigate as there was immense
lateral grip to offset gravity on every single turn.

La Griffe is a wonderful example of multiple stepped pitches
with short plateaus that give it a distinct rhythm. The main
advantage of those steps and plateaus is the ability to regulate
speed that may have accumulated on the pitches. It’s descent
path is generally a right hand turning sequence over the steps
and indeed, there are no left hand turns at all as it works its way
down somewhat parallel to Fuddle Duddle and Windigo.

Freshly falling new snow over an immaculately groomed base
is one of the most rewarding skiing experiences recreational
skiers can ever have. The smoothness over a totally reliable
base quality with just about zero flaws generates a floating
sensation that is hard to adequately describe, but is addictively
fun and technically rewarding.

La Griffe is a single Black Diamond, however when freshly
groomed and in near flawless condition with such responsive
and forgiving surfaces as it should have today, we would not
hesitate to take a confident Intermediate there to use the steps
as very manageable introductions to navigating steeper challenge.

Conditions Notes:

As a structural component of the groomed trail network,
the new snowfall is an excellent addition because of its
packable density without any evident saturation at all.
There were some higher friction zones within the
uncompressed falling snow, but we do not think those
will be nearly the same with the overnight grooming.

In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste and Un-Groomed categories
it is definitely a top-level aerobic workout. There is exactly
enough internal humidity to make it a thick and dense
medium to move in, however there is zero saturation, so
it has a rather unique bankable quality that wants very
assertive control inputs in order to overcome the momentary
resistance of its density in the turn initiation phase.
