T360 Middle Of The Night Shift Apres Ski @ 3:17 A.M.

The wind has gone from almost nothing to being a “Howler”
in just a handful of hours... Currently straight up the Lowell
Thomas Quad/P’tit Bonheur.

At least it’s not the heavy freezing rain just south of us. Please
review the “Supplementary Weather Forecast Data" graphic below.
We are on the right side of winter on this one.

Photography yesterday was definitely challenging due
to the very flat low contrast, often foggy, dark overcast,
periodically semi-sleety warm ’n wet atmospheric conditions.

We were going to toss the pic. above away but even though the
focus is a bit soft, there is an obvious display of balance and
good lateral grip in motion that was indicative of the groomed
performance everywhere. Basically, the entire open range of
groomed terrain was a giant sheet of super high traction spring
snow action. We got wet, but the inconvenience of that was totally
forgotten because every run was so much fun.

How much of that spring-like soft surface performance there
is today is not completely predictable due to the swing back to
Sub-Zero C, so we can fully understand the consequential impact
on the Open trail list which may/could be expected to change multiple
times today.

What we fully expect to carry over within the groomed is the smoothness.
Anything and everything shifting temp’s can do is so much easier when
the default is “Smooth”.

Weather Notes:

This is a very complex circumstance made more complex
with the drop in temperatures from a warm, “+” C overnight
with a rainy atmosphere, transitioning to a base level of right
at Zero C, which means Mountain elevations could go several
degrees below. It would be the potential of the re-freeze that
may add additional complexity.

When the open trail status can be changing,
sometimes on a run-by-run basis,

Frequent Info.Ski consults are essential!

Talk to these helpful folks every run, if needed.

Repeat:

What we fully expect to carry over within the groomed is the smoothness.
Anything and everything shifting temp’s can do is so much easier when
the default is “Smooth”.

It is highly likely that there will be icy bits. Sharp, freshly
tuned edges will be a major asset for safety and fun.

As far as the Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed...
That is a whole different and subject to far more individualistic
circumstances. These trail categories are the most sensitive
to coverage and challenge difficulties so it’s a very a la Carte,
one-by-one assessment that is very dynamic. Ultra caution
in all explorations at reduced speeds is imperative for any
open terrain in this group. Ski Patrol hand posted signage
should be taken with the upmost respect. Genuine Experts
Only Please.
