It’s Been Like This For Days,

A bit impractical for photography...

Weather Notes:

This Is An Authentic Winter “Howler”.

Wind Chill Caveat In Effect:

Summit wind chill values may reach down to -25C.

Descent speed into headwinds will produce net
wind chill values down to -33C.

Use extreme caution with regard to exposed skin
at zero and similarly with cold registered pain or
discomfort. If you have fingers or toes that hurt
but you stay out side and the pain goes away,
you most likely have frostbite damage. Go inside
immediately.

Use extreme caution with little children and
consider outdoor deferral until you can confirm
safe exposures.

-------------------------------------------------------

In the sides of Tremblant where there is favourable
shelter from direct frontal winds, this is a sample
of the raw material snowfall quality as it is being
laid down over all surfaces.

It is a very fine, dry, sugar-granule sized particle
that has a grippy characteristic due to microscopic
rough edges that allow it to cling to itself as the
layers build up.

As you can see it does not care if the surfaces it is
building on are vertical or horizontal and there is
just enough swirl in the wind here to have it coating
everything, almost from the inside out.

In this specific case the pic was taken on upper
P’tit Bonheur, just inside the right hand turn
below the top pitch. For the most part, the wind
here was calm while you could literally hear it
howling back up over the Summit. About every
minute or so though, Mother Nature would wave
her hand and a small puff of snow filled air would
swirl through and lay another little dusty layer of
snow crystals over everything.

Absolutely amazing to see, if you just take a minute
to stop and watch. Of course, 80% of people racing by
are too absorbed with making the fastest run possible
so the majority of folks will not see this, but to us,
it’s endlessly fascinating and we think it’s an essential
insight into why the snow feels so good underfoot.

Conditions Notes:

Generally:

Notwithstanding the cold which requires the obvious
adaptations, clinically speaking the skiing will be
excellent because of the exceptional performance
that is inherent in cryogenic snow.

In The Groomed:

Where freshly groomed very fine to excellent across
all skill level ranges. Due to the wind component
there could be a significant degree of variability
over time in direct wind facing zones where sustained
wind velocity could work to move loose snow into the
bush, leaving some ares subject to firm or slick base
exposures. This may be particularly noticeable around and
just below topographical contours/crests or where traffic
gets concentrated by narrowing or intersecting trails.

On the flip-side, areas in the lee or sheltered from behind
the Summit, could see very favourable drift-in from snow
being pushed over the top, where it swirls downward to
settle and lay in under calmer air masses.

You’ll need to be ready for anything.

It is a day where if you can find a “comfort zone” of
practical utility, you may want to stay there for laps
for the sake of easier personal outdoor durability.

In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:

On a comparative basis, and with specific reference to
the Versant Nord/North Side and Edge Sector
Sous Bois, this is the group that could see both
beneficial snowfall accumulations as well as lee-side
shelter, so the potential is that these zones could actually
be the easiest to stay out for. Not only will they be in
the wind shelter behind the Summit, but the trees act
as huge wind buffers at ground level. There could be
areas within these open Sous Bois trails where there
is close to calmness near the ground while you can
hear the wind howling in the distance in the upper
atmospheric strata.

For Experts who like these open Sous Bois zones,
today could actually be the best utility sweet spots
of the whole Mountain.
