2/21/12 Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

94(*) Open Trails out of 95 possible.

The one closed trail is the Glade, or Sous-bois bush sector
designated Double Black Diamond # 52, "Brasse-Camarades"
at the top of Soleil between the first pitch of Laurentienne
and Tiguidou.

Cruising up Duncan This morning will seem "Crisp", but the suns
thermal energy will bring things up quite a bit by shortly after lunch.

-16 C This Morning, so definitely cool out, but that's fine, we're
used to winter and we'd prefer to extend it where ever possible
considering that warm will come soon enough.

The coolness actually ensures the quality of the Alpine Snow Surfaces
as it tends to dry out any latent moisture or dampness in the crystalline
layers, so there will be great grip, edge control and speed in todays
conditions.

The projected day-time high temp for South Side Base is -2 C and under
mostly sunny sky's, so there could be a slight degree of Solar softening in
places of lower South terrain, but the Summit, North and Edge sectors
should all remain nicely in a very easy and comfortable cool mode all day.

This is American Presidents Holiday week, so there are lot's of guests
from all over, some of whom have not been here before, so to all of
you in that group, Welcome to Tremblant! It is our fondest hope that
you discover the charm and magic of this wonderful Mountain that
has traditionally been very good at capturing the hearts of all who visit
for the first time. As a matter of fact, the very creation of a Ski Resort
at Tremblant is due to the visit of an American, Joe Ryan, in 1938, who
was so impressed with the Mountain in its raw form that he decided to
undertake its development into a Ski Resort that over years and decades
has become what you see before you now.

The principle basis for Joe Ryan's effort was the absolute conviction he
had for the recognition of Tremblant's geographic features as being a World
Class Alpine domain, and he was right. It was a big risk at the time considering
the Great Depression and the imminent threat of World War looming in 1938
Europe, but his faith in Tremblant was complete and you are now experiencing
the current Resort's refined vision that he had for this magnificent Mountain.

Re: Forecasting and the Big Picture.

Yesterday, we published a very potentially positive, with a big "IF",
Snowfall outlook for the next 5 days. Here it is again for your reference.

Time will tell if it actually happens, and the forecast has
changed, again, but....

There is always a risk involved with making weather related
projections. People with Doctorates in various sciences of physical, computer
or any other applicable studies, spend lifetimes attempting to become more
precise in the weather field where they are frequently exposed to criticism
for being wrong.

That does not mean they don't keep on trying though, so we take
that to heart when it comes to being prepared for very big Snow
events, such as we might expect this coming week.

Yesterday at 8:00 A.M. we had the third 5 day weather model from
the weather network that showed a tremendous potential for up to
close to 60 CM of new snow over the 5 day period and we posted
accordingly in last night's Apres Ski(as now shown above).

Today, we have the forth. Each one of these 4 models has shown
more, less, then more again, and now less for the same time, so
realistically, we have to accept the possibility that there may be less
than the more they thought yesterday.

whewww... it's getting confusing... or maybe not... maybe the real pattern
lies in the convergence of "More" with "When", because if this daily change
in forecasting "More" or "Less" just happens to generate snow that occurs on
an actual "More" cycle, we could still get a ton of Snow!

The real risk we see is in missing even the potential of the Big Snow
if you're a local or regional Tremblant fan that has the option of either
being here or not, if and when it happens.

It's kinda' like going to the Casino of Mother Nature...
You'd like to win... There's a chance you could win...
But you'll never know unless you go.

In the case of Tremblant fans that can make it, the odds are
actually better, statistically speaking, than going to a Casino, because
not only will there be a tremendous bonus if all the anticipated snow
occurs, but even if it doesn't, you still get to Ski or Board on the existing
excellent, full winter surfaces that are already World Class.

From that perspective, it's a win, or win big proposition you can't lose on.

Of course there are going to be the "Nay Sayers" that say "You spoke
too soon", but that is illogical, Mother Nature will do as she pleases
and the superstitious musings of humans on either side of the topic will
not effect the final outcome, great or little.
"Que Sera, Sera"

Therefore, we say, be ready anyway and "Get Here When You Can" to enjoy
Tremblant to the fullness of each and every day for as many days as we can
all Ski or Board this beautiful Mountain, but we're keeping our fingers crossed
for both Good Luck and Big Snow just the same.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived index pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

( If You "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate, current to
25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by consecutive date.)

T360 Apres Ski ...

We're watching the weather with curiosity and great
intrest due to the highly uncertain total amounts of
snowfall that we're going to get, indeed, the snowfall
that's already started...

Snowing on the North as per time stamp(s).

What we hope to do is to monitor the North Base Web Cam
through the night to see the progression of snow accumulation
and record the images of the same frame, but time advanced,
to see incremental build-up.

In the mean-time, what we have going on is at least on the surface,
exactly what we have speculated on with the annotated Weather Network
Chart in the post above. Orographic snowfall on the North, cause by a Southerly
wind pushing moisture filled warm air up into colder high elevation air over the
Summit of Tremblant. The moisture is condensing up in the cold air and forming
snow that is now starting to fall, as you can see in the above Web Cam pic.

To help illustrate that, here is the South Base within the same time frame...
showing no white specks, flakes, flurries or any other signs of snow as can be
seen in the North Pic.

Here's the Summit in cloud. The temp' at this higher elevation level are
low enough to cause the condensation and snowfall while the South wind
coming basically up the Mountain from the Soleil sector, is driving the snow
over to fall farther down on the North.

How far this process advances over the night will only be proven
by time and we'll do our best to add the pic.proof here.
