-------------- 5:23 A.M. Orig. Post -------------------
26(*) Open Trails on South, North Sides of Tremblant.
We are very happy to see the Expo Quad back on-line
this morning as this sector is one of the most enjoyable
of the current inventory, not to mention, the only way to
"connect the dots" with a Summit to Base North
Side descent path. Thankfully, the glitch that
had it off-line yesterday afternoon seems to have been
dealt with, so away we go.
------------ 9:03 A.M. Update -----------------
"Proof Of Expo"
-----------------------------------------------------
Despite all yesterday's weather sky-drama, and a rain forecast,
it never happened.
All you could see was Snow.
The views from the Summit while all this active weather was on the move
were mesmerizing to say the least. Every few seconds you could pick
out the vigorous and very rapidly evolving local patterns of snow squall
action that were going on around the surrounding visible areas. Stop to
focus on one, and by the time that registered, looking back at others,
they had all changed... a fascinating and very dynamic sky.
Today is forecasted to be a more solidly Sunny, less cloudy day,
a bit cooler, but that's fine because so far, what's been good about
the sub-zero overnights is that the surfaces have not frozen up as
much as we may have expected. So, what we have are quite winter-like
surfaces with a fairly loose, course granular top layer in most places
on the Groomed, with very good grip and edge hold. It is not a
particularly thick top layer, but with sharp fresh edges the carving
and speed are reliable and very much capable of letting you have
a very demanding workout style training run anytime you feel like
pushing beyond "cruise control".
The Fun And Exercise Start Here...
For the past 2 weeks or so, since the big heat wave that just about
killed the entire East Coast Alpine Winter Season, we think the
combination of P'tit Bonheur to Beauchemin Bas, Lower, has been
a candidate for the finest Snow surfaces east of the Rocky Mountains.
This descent path has been absolutely reliable, glitch free and very fast
each and every day. Period.
The signs of Spring are more apparent every day....
and far more developed on the South too, as one might
expect with more direct Solar Energy exposure.
The growth activity clearly shown in the trees is advancing up the
Mountain on the South at a faster rate than North. This pic. above,
is taken on Nansen Haut, Upper, at the top level of the Nansen pitch.
We're not sure if we've ever seen this amount of early growth this close
to the Summit by April 4th before, but no doubt it's here today.
Above, Nansen Haut, Upper, Surface Sample, 4/4/2012
None of that has effected the fine, smooth and very well maintained
Snow Surfaces of Nansen. True, it has become softer, sooner each
day due to it's Southerly orientation, but it still remains in very fine
condition and for the most part, fast too, right down to the bottom
plateau's that can be a bit prone to late afternoon sticky.
Descending on the South by Beauvallon to Johannsen was very fine too.
Above... Looking up Beauvallon Bas, Lower, toward TGV, which is just out of
sight upper screen left. This terrain is wide, fast and smooth, even after
the days traffic.
Last Run....
Below... Johannsen was still in fine shape after the days traffic too. The
overcast probably helped as it kept the some of the heat off the
surface. It was easy to turn on, but not mushy, the softest part was the last
50 meters or so right before the Gondola base.
If it seems quiet in the above, it's because it was 4:45 P.M. when
we got here as we took a long time at the Summit to observe the
fascinating weather.
Another Awesome Tremblant Day... Beautiful in Any Weather.
26(*) Open Trails on the Official, Downloadable,
PDF, Trail and Grooming status report,
Courtesy of Tremblant.ca All things considered, the Groomed inventory is in remarkably fine shape.
We can, and do spend hours and hours carving as much and as hard as
muscles will permit and there is no doubt that Tremblant can provide
a thoroughly demanding Alpine Workout for Skiers or Boarders of
any Skill level.
The Un-Groomed expert terrain is a Wild-Card, in that there are sectors
that are very sparse to sectors that are almost perfect. Extreme care is
required in these areas.
