1/15/13 Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

56(*) Open Trails on the Rapidly Recovering
Slopes of Tremblant.

Mountain crews have been working at a very high
intensity level for more than 24 hours now and the
results are impressive. It Snowed Too!

Of course, there will be some that think it should all be
fixed overnight, but considering that a Grooming Machine
can cover about 4 acres per hour in the hands of a skilled
operator, even with many multiple machines, it will
take a day or two to sort through it all.

Additionally, quite a bit of the terrain requires two passes.
One to break up the icy surface with the Machines Track Cleats,
the second to use the powerful tiller mechanism hanging off
the back to render the surface to the degree of fine particle size
that is skiable. Even then, it takes another day(s) to reduce the
particle size further and further, and with subsequent Grooming passes
as well as Mountain Participant traffic, we get back the loose, fine
granular snow that will readily hold a carved edge.

Below is a telephoto, from across Lac Tremblant, of the central core
of Versant Sud, the South Side from yesterday at around noon and
the important thing to note here is the overwhelmingly white of the
main trail network.

The reality of "on the ground" experience is that the "white" is all there,
but it is quite solid, as in... what was soaked for the previous two days
with plus temp values, is now solid with minus temps, but it's still there.
Many of the trails closed, were so, in order to facilitate daytime grooming.

Riding up the Gondola over Kandahar looks wonderful, but it is very "Firm"
and when this was taken yesterday, closed. Today it is on the Progressive
Opening list.

Swinging around 180 and taken from inside the Gondola(hence the
"soft" appearance of this pic due to debris on Gondola Windows),
this is a very important shot to Tremblant Fans as a 4 unit Grooming
team works it's way up McCulloch in the initial stages of recovering
this Classic Tremblant favourite.

In The Open Terrain:
Predictably, there was a lot of icy in the surfaces, however there was a
skim of loose granular over most of it. It was just thin, so there was not
much margin for error in applying edges for grip in some areas.

These conditions are where edge tuning is a more critical element than
usual.

There were other areas, like Beauchemin on the North Side, where there
was great skiing yesterday on a remarkably deep loose top layer and carving
was not much different than it had been. Granted, it was comparatively small
amount of area, but non-the-less a sure sign that recovery is well under way.

The Skiing and Boarding will literally improve each passing day with
refinements, so make sure your Edges/Bases are tuned, hit the road,
then hit the slopes at Tremblant!

If you are planning to visit soon, you can look forward to lots
of great terrain, but arriving with tuned gear will put you miles ahead
in performance and control.

If you do not have access to good Ski/Board tuning facilities where
ever you live, go to the Ski/Board Repair Shop in the Chalet des Voyageurs
at the foot of the Cabriolet, as soon as you can when you get here.
They have one of the best tuning machines on planet Earth, very skilled
staff and their prices are very reasonable.

Yesterdays weather did not take long to show us all that things
were cooling off quickly. Note the frost in the tree bough's screen right,
below.

The New Snow is not a blizzard, but enough to accelerate the
recovery process. Natural Snow integrated with the mechanically
restored surfaces, always quickens the restoration as well as
elevates the quality.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
