2/21/13 Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

.

92(*) Open Trails on all 4 sides of Tremblant.

Thank Goodness for "North".

We often talk about "Tipping Points" in terms of conditions, so today
and for the foreseeable near term, we're giving thanks for Tremblant's
Northerly Latitude that we hope will be keeping it, just on the right side
of the major tipping point of below 0 degrees C, or 32 degrees F, the
freezing mark.

Today's daytime high has been revised downward to -1C and however
close that may be to the freezing mark, it's still below, and that's the
main thing we need to perpetuate the fine surfaces we have now.

In last night's Apres Ski we ran this Tremblant Referenced Twitter
Feedback:

2.20.13 Twitter Tremblant Feedback Quote:

"Sick day in Tremblant today! Been snowing non stop since last night!
Still snowing to! Gonna be another sweet day tomoro! Even hit some pow"

In the vernacular of 2013, "Sick" means Excellent, Great, Very Fine, etc.

Based on experience, and monitoring of Social Media we could not agree
more. Statistically, Tremblant has received 29 CM's in the past 24 hours and
50 CM's in the past 7 days. For all our visiting American Cousins up for
"Presidents Day" week... that's within half an inch of a foot of fresh snow
in the last day and within half an inch of 20 inches in the past week.

Below:
Here is what you have to "Work With" at Tremblant right now. Normally,
we would have our back to this view as we're shooting the fine panorama
over upper P'tit Bonheur that you can see 180 degrees from here, but we
wanted to focus on the basic element that makes Tremblant what it is today.
Very Fine Natural Snow...

Statistically, the deepest freeze of winter is behind us now and the pleasant,
milder temps of warmer, sunnier, longer days are now upon us to both
look forward to, and make plans to get out and enjoy.

With that in mind, we want to take an analytical look at the Eastern North
American Regional Outlook for the next two weeks because this time period
represents some of the potentially sweetest Ski/Board conditions of the season.

The following review has multiple, useful applications to Regional Ski/Board Fans
who have discretionary decisions to make regarding "Where To Go" to Ski/Board
over the next couple of weeks. We want to provide some "Homework" to those
who live regionally that would support Tremblant as the best possible chance you
have for consistent, high quality, winter surfaces when using "Google" or any
other search/research mechanism to evaluate your options.

Roughly speaking, there is a diagonal temperature line running from
West to East just above the St.Lawrence River Valley that has cooler
daytime high temperatures and Snow precipitation above the line, and
warmer daytime highs and some rain precipitation below the line.

This is a typical/common regional phenomenon within the latter stages
of winter into spring.

The benefits to "Winter" Ski/Board Conditions at Tremblant are obvious
when you look at the data and that's why we think everyone who's trying
to decide where to go over the next while should strongly consider Tremblant
over other options.

While Major Ski Resort Areas to the South may be struggling with rain, ice
and the huge logistical task of dealing with those factors through daily cycles
of freeze and thaw, Tremblant Mountain Crews should be able to concentrate
on the refinement of Winter surfaces every day Apres Ski.

Another useful aspect of this comparison is that if you are reading this at
any point in the future, months or years from now, while researching where
to spend your hard earned Ski/Board Vacation Dollars at this time of the season,
Tremblant always has the benefit of a more Northerly Latitude at this time of year
when it comes to Surface Conditions.

Bottom line... "North" always has an advantage over "South" when it comes
to keeping fine "Winter" Snow Surface Conditions, and in that regard, Tremblant
may always have better odds than it's regional peers.

CAVEAT: Weather forecasting always has risks of incorrect, but there is a very
high probability that generally speaking, they will be reasonably representative
of Regional trends.

CAVEAT: We are Die-Hard Biased Tremblant Fans... for 40 years. Skied 'em all...
still Love Tremblant!

Today's conditions should see the complete pure winter range for all
skill levels as noted in the PDF document below. There will be sectors
of the Mountain that have more snow accumulation than the stats' as
well as those that have less, depending on the way the wind shaped the
fine points, but with an overnight low of -19C, it should all be very nice
and dry with low forward resistance and very good glide.

The winds for the past 24 hours have been steadily West, coming up the
Mountain over Taschereau and crossing the Summit towards Lowell Thomas,
and because they have been relatively light, below 7 KMPH at base, we
would expect both South and North Summit Sectors to have the bulk
of the accumulations with some unique drifting on both as well.

On the South Descents, the left hand side of runs should have the greatest
snow retention rate, although the closer you get to Nansen, working
across the South face, the more even things may be.

On the North, our usual favourites Banzai and Marie-Claude Asselin's
lower portions, accessed from the Lowell Thomas to Duncan Cat-Track,
should hold some of the most primo likelihood of depth, but the westerly
orientation often favours Superieur and Geant too when the velocities are
light and snow swirls around that side of the Mountain. Look for the depth
and drifting on the right side of North descents.

Our One Pic. Trail Snow Sample for today. Specific depths may vary from
one area to the next, but the basic ingredient is pure "Winter" Snow.

If you are undecided about where to Ski/Board
over the next while, your odds of great winter surfaces
are going to be better at Tremblant.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
