3/12/13 Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

Quick Apres Ski Edit Notes ...

The worst of the mornings precipitation was a misty drizzle...
no rain.

It was foggy/cloudy at the Summit and to variable degrees, half
way down, occasionally almost all the way down.

There were lots of folks with Poncho's on, but those that didn't,
at the worst got a wet bum from the Chair Lift seats, and even
then, the seats were dry off and on as the afternoon went by.

When you can't get the Long Range Panoramic Vista's...
go for Macro's....

Cruising on Axle to get over to Lowell T., we stopped to admire
the Macro beauty in the fur trees.

These droplets were semi-congealed, i.e., partially frozen, so they do
not have the super shiny reflective optics of a liquid water drop,
but they are marking the 3:45 P.M. time at which the temps
are dropping below the freezing mark.

Coming up Duncan at 3:55, it was snowing big fat lazy flakes of
fresh snow, no blizzard for sure, but way better than rain and
a beautifully positive note to add to the end of the day.

Skiing down Nansen at 4:15, it was pea soup fog.

The Skiing was very fine "Spring" soft, ultra-carvable
damp snow. It's not yet corn snow, but close.
Board people seemed to be doing O.K., but there were
a lot of them borrowing a Ski pole from their friends
to get across plateau's.

We had our Skis Waxed with a Swix "Warm" range product
by the folks at Le Ski Shop and we were fast all day. No problem
bypassing about 90% of the public. Skiing "Spring Conditions"
with waxed bases really is a treat because you can make
tons of speed, and tons of lateral grip in the soft snow, so
it's super easy to hold turns together at sustained Workout
levels that are very demanding exercise.

You're having so much fun you don't notice it until end of day....

Then your Quads remind you... protein... we need protein!

Oh, and they dropped the open trail count down to 70 this morning,
but we never bothered us where we went, primarily on the Groomed.

81(*) Open Trails on 3 of 4 sides of Tremblant.

This morning's Official Snow Report shows the Edge Sector off-line today.

The skiing and Boarding will be fine this morning, but there are going to
be some natural hazards showing through, so initial explorations will
need to be undertaken with care until safe passage is verified on the
sectors you're in for the first time.

What Will This Look like Today....

Yesterday, one of our favourite places on the Mountain, the lower half
of Marie-Claude Asselin on Versant Nord, The North side, was in superb
"Spring" condition. Wall to wall soft Spring snow with not hardly a mark
on it, not much more than the odd twig.

Over on P'tit Bonheur...

The super smooth and cooler than the South surfaces of P'tit Bonheur
continue to be the most amazingly reliable, count on them to be
damn near perfect every single day, Skiing and Boarding in Eastern
North America.

Slightly Softer than the North, South Runs were still very fine Spring Snow
and when necessary, they took a little more effort to skate on due to less glide.

As A Functional Utility Note: Waxing or coating Ski/Board bases with a "Warm"
temp range material will vastly improve Spring performance. Breaking the
moisture induced drag or resistance to forward motion with this preparation
will elevate your enjoyment factor as you whizz by just about everyone else.

There is a benefit to moisture induced resistance....
All these types of runs get easier with a little bit of natural braking effect!

Until we get on the Mountain today, there's no practical way for us to know
how the overnight rain fell and affected Marie-Claude, or any other Trail.
Currently, the web cams show virtually the entire Mountain shrouded in
fog/cloud.

That may be a good thing though....

Typically, the bulk of precipitation falls Below the cloud, not In the cloud.

It may well be damp up there, but we're hoping it's not getting the rain
that's falling below the cloud in St. Jovite.

Typically, due to Tremblant's huge and multi-sided South, North, East and
West geographical faces, there are cell-like pockets of precipitation activity
where it can be anything from heavy to light or none at all, so it's too early
to say where the most or least effects are.

Additionally, the overnight low temp was +2 C, South Base level, and that
means with the usual cooler by 4 or 5 C at the Summit and on North sectors,
there may have been some freezing going on to, so that could increase the
complexity of the early morning surfaces.

Based on what we Skied and saw yesterday, we're observing that the
still very heavy frost in the Mountain is going to hold the base stable
for some while yet into the future, like weeks, so today will be much
the same as yesterday by mid morning. Super Soft, easy carve, easy
side-slip spring snow.

A Bit Fuzzy, But Still Fun!

Here's a 3pic Sequence we got at the Foot of Johannsen at Last Run
yesterday afternoon. It's handheld long telephoto series in grey light that
makes for challenging photography, but it says a lot about the day
and the necessary frame of mind that helps immeasurably to enjoy
less than ideal weather any time...

(Please Note: we had to burn in a lot of highlights, contrast
and saturation to get detail out of these... sorry about that...)

Any Day At Tremblant Is A Fun Day !!!
...with the right gear and the right attitude.

The rest of todays weather... is supposed to be continued warm with
showers, once agin suggesting to us that not all areas will see rain,
but late this evening, a rather sudden return to cool with an overnight
low of -7C. Poncho today... skate quality edges tomorrow...

There are also small daily amounts of Snow forecast for the next several
days too... that would be nice Dear Mother Nature...

Both the Official Snow Report and the Downloadable PDF were published
about an hour later than they usually are today. What that tells us is that there
was a ton of activity going on behind the scenes to verify the content.
We respect that and under the circumstances with the overnight rain,
completely understandable.

What we really like about the list this morning is that there are no
progressives, or gradual Openings at all. This is a definitive list right
from the start, and we take that as a positive sign of the all-nighter efforts
of Mountain Crews.

The Seasonal Hard Frost into the Mountain
is holding the base up very well at this stage.

This will continue for some weeks yet, particularly
with dropping temps over the next 24 hours to help
settle back into "cold".

Additional New Snow, as light or incrementally as it may come
will also be a big asset in top-layer surface quality.

Bottom line...

"Spring" always means adapting to unique and sometimes highly
variable daily conditions, but there's still a great base to work with
and consequently great Skiing and Boarding too.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
