T360 Apres Ski Intro... @ 11:40 P.M.

(More Apres Ski attached below in "Reply")

The Sun shone for approximately 38 seconds at about 1:55 P.M.

There was a wisp of blue in the Sky...

Then, as quickly as it appeared, it disappeared.

The rest of the day it was fog/cloud/Snowfall/Snowmaking
cool, but not cold, more fresh snow day....

.... with very fine early season conditions, that are considerably above average.

Archival Diary Keeping is not always Cake and Ice-cream... sometimes...

Operational Glitch.

At shortly after 2:00 P.M there was a stoppage on Duncan. We did
receive text questions from group members on it at the time. We were
not privy to any reasons at the time, nor are we now. Other than a slow
ride up for those aboard, there was the consequent load shift to Expo and
Lowell Thomas, so delays occurred in North up-hill transit for the rest of
the afternoon.

We had received a Twitter request for recent Duncan Status earlier in the
week and had replied Positively due to previous seasons issues having
been rectified, so we hope this does not signify anything other than a
temporary anomaly.

We had an excellent workout Skiing today.

We also had a Binding failure at Last Run that necessitated some
Down-Hill Hiking from the bottom of P'tit Bonheur. We took pic's
along the way and finally we got rescued by a very friendly
Ski Patrol Person on a Ski-Doo who gave us a ride to the bottom
of the North.

Our thanks to the Ski Patrol for their helpful assistance.

Got a couple pic's from that below, in Apres Ski "Reply".

61(*) Open Trails on Three Open Sides Of Tremblant.

Despite South Side, Wind Induced Lift Closures yesterday, the available
North Side Terrain was in quite nice shape, all things considered.
With the thickness of much newly fallen Snow, there is always
extra effort required by Skiers and Boarders to navigate, as well
as Mountain Crews to integrate.

(Please Note: All pic's are affected by foggy, sleety, damp, snowy
sometimes wet lens syndrome, in flat, low contrast, grey, ambient
light conditions and may be less than ideal, however, it's a Ski Resort,
and "Too Much Snow" falling and flying around should be taken as a
sign of great conditions by viewers.)

As you drove to the North, this was your first sign of some
truly extraordinary Drifted Deep Snow that experts love to see....

We do not exaggerate snow accumulations, but the irregular nature
of the drifting over, around, above and below topographical features
and contours make it impossible to document each and every pocket
of depth. The Pic's show exactly what you need to know. There are some
very deep drifting features on the North and our reports are definitely
on the Level.

Today will be a quiet day for Mountain Traffic and depending on
the amount of Grooming Crews can cover, potentially an extraordinary
day of very fine Skiing/Boarding for all Skill Levels.

Sissy Schuss, Haut, Upper, to Fuddle Duddle Bas, Lower,
Versant Nord, The North Side, Officially Open December 22nd, 2013.

Some may wonder why we would pay so much attention to Sissy Schuss,
Nord, North Trail #78, a Green rated run cut in 1948.

In our opinion, it is a way under-rated learning environment that while
used extensively by the Ecole Sur Neige, Tremblant's Ski School, for
almost absolute beginners, is largely ignored by the general population
of Intermediates and Experts who think they need more challenge than it offers.

We respectfully disagree. This run is a masterpiece of simple brilliance,
much like Nansen, or P'tit Bonheur and it has one of the most valuable
learning assets at Tremblant, namely, "Nuance".

Look up "Nuance" and here's what you get....

The Sissy Schuss Upper to Fuddle Duddle Lower circuit is
a lapping/learning environment that may well be one of the finest
subtle edge control runs ever created.

It has enough pitch to make dangerous speed, it has flowing land
contours with a harmonious rhythm, and it is typically groomed
to virtual perfection with some of the most favourably consistent
Snow Surface Conditions at Tremblant.

The learning benefit is that by being able to rely 100% on the
immaculate moderately pitched descent, one can focus entirely
on the Nuances of subtle edge control and efficient speed generation
without having to worry or deal with too much gravity.

We say "Any Sailor can go fast in a big wind", but it is only the truly
skillful sailors that win races in gentle winds.

Same here. By learning and mastering the very fine points of control,
on this wonderful terrain, those lessons can be taken to any slopes in
the world and applied directly no matter how steep or difficult.

In another metaphor, playing the most complex Beethoven Piano Concerto
begins with a single key, and in similar terms, this great run represents
some of the most basic keys to advanced skill levels.

Above: Despite the Posted Signage, this is actually one of the
best First Day Quality Openings we've had on this run.

Below, Sissy Schuss:
This is a series of Bad Action Shots, but Good Snow Detail Shots.

At first we were going to discard them, but after review they do
depict an unusually revealing dynamic and they do show the
surface conditions fairly well. From a photo standpoint, the flat grey
light required a big aperture and a long shuttler opening to capture the
surface detail, so the Skiers are fuzzy because they move that far
during the exposure.

We could have had the Skiers Sharp and the Snow surface blurry, but
seeing the Snow surface for what it's actually like is far more useful
to anyone wanting to know "Hows The Skiing?"

The Dynamic the Fuzzy Skiers show is that basically, you need a
little Speed to blast through the Crud and to pop off the small bumps
to assist in the "Un-Weighting" phase of the Ski turn.

The surfaces above are soft and require a compact, low stance over
Skis fairly close to make a good "Platform" under-foot. This run will respond
to grooming very well and over the next days should become very, very fine.

----- CONDITIONS CAVEATS: --------

With TONS of New Snow....

There are many Soft Zones that Beginners and Intermediates
may find a bit thick to navigate. Use your Snowplow and/or
come to a complete stop as often as is necessary to keep speed
under absolute control.

Oddly enough, we have found some very rare icy substrates exposed by Traffic
on steeper pitches and in some narrow high flow passages.

This shows that anything is possible, so we recommend reduced speeds
on all accounts for initial explorations.

Allow extra room in Beginner/Green designated areas for those
who may make sudden course changes without any notice at all.

Choose Terrain that is appropriate for your Skill Level and Obey
all posted Ski Patrol Temporary Signage on the Mountain that can
supersede permanent trail signage when conditions can make a Blue
into a Black, or turns a single Black into a Double Black.

Edge Sector Caveats:

This sector requires Expert Level Skills. It also requires that people
using the area have Skis or Board that they will be prepared to suffer
potential damage to. Unfortunately, some of the Hazards are covered by
the recent snow, and it is impossible to know what is under every contour.
There are rocks, sticks, tree branches and other natural debris under
this often thin layer. Basically the hazards are being camouflaged or hidden,
which you don't know until after contact is made.

Considering the size and dimensions of the Snowmaking bumps on Trail #88
"Action", it seems possible that there could be enough to create a Groomed
track. If and When Trail #88, Action, is Groomed, it's user friendliness
will be exponentially greater, but until that time, it is very difficult and
please be aware that the Posted Warning Signage should be considered seriously.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)

T360 Apres Ski...

An Unusual Day, but good Skiing, none-the-less.

Photography wise, another Flat, Low-Contrast, Grey light day.

But we got "Waves"... Thanks!

Here is everything we've been talking about on the "Performance"
capabilities of the Snow surfaces... Lots of Grip and control on a
high traction surface.

Taken on Fuddle Duddle Bas, Lower, this shot captures flexed
Skis holding an excellent edge-set through the turn.

Basically, you can do this all day long if you have the muscle for it.

Below:
When every-things covered in Cloud/Fog and you can't get those
far-off Panoramas ... go for the macro....

So then, Not Long After That...

a binding failure, to the point that it was not safe to use Skis,
popping bindings randomly while under way.

Now we're hiking down Beauchemin, but finally a very friendly
Ski Patrol person comes along with a Ski-Doo and gives us a ride
back to base, North...
Thanks Ski Patrol!!!
