1/6/14 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Apres Ski Notes @ 4:20 P.M.

You Know it's a Whacky Winter Weather Day when it ends
up colder in Atlanta, Georgia, than in Anchorage, Alaska.

That's due to an Arctic Vortex from the Geographic North Pole ... Plus...
Super cold air from Siberia that has driven directly over the
pole to descend on Eastern North America.

Rare, very rare Weather, indeed.

There are roughly 30 "Progressive" listed Trails on the
Official Open Trail data today.

If you're wondering what the Open Trail Count might be tomorrow,
a guess, just a guess, might be to add from any, to all of those 30
to today's 20 for a number somewhere between 20 and 50(*)???

There is also a possibility that the "Flash Freeze" may
make todays Progressives impossible for tomorrow.???

Even if it's not possible to clear the Progressives, we think
it's unlikely the number would go down much.

More later...

Comparing the 2 Lowell Thomas Summit Sector views, the differences
are quite visible in the trees, however the effects on the ground will be less
due to the tremendously deep and very cold frost of the last 6 weeks or so.

That deep frost will hold the base no problem, but the very top surface
layer will potentially have a very "Crusty", Icy character.

We've said it before... "Icy" is way better than "Gone".

Mountain Crews can do miracles with "Icy". The powerful Pinroth
Groomer/Packers can render very fine particle surfaces with repeated
daily cycles.

That's why we wrote below in the original post:

"We think we'll be facing a minimum restoration process of 3 days to get
the sense of broadly restored granular top layers."

We should also add that Skier Boarder Traffic helps tremendously
to assist in breaking down the particle sizes, so get out and do your
part to help if you can.

---------------- 12:03 P.M. Orig. Post --------------

20(*) Open Trails on the Freezing Rain, Weather Glitched Slopes of Tremblant.

The Entire Eastern Half Of North America Has Been
Involved With This Severe Rain, Freezing Rain, Storm Event...
and it ain't over yet, as Flash Freeze Warnings are out now too.

Very sorry for very late report, however late last eve., we had a basement
flood issue due to an ice dam around a portion of foundation, necessitating
an immediate shift in time, as in an all-nighter, and labour, as in Pick-Axe
hand digging water flow channels AND emergency water evacuation from
basement, all to prevent major damage to our home base structure. That
Emergency has diverted us away from any computer time what-so-ever.

That experience, plus the 20(*) Open Trail Count will tell you
most of what you need to know about the weather impact at Tremblant.

Unfortunately, this emergency personal situation will restrict our
ability to be BOTH On-Line, and on the Mountain for at least a couple
of days until we can get repairs and other such corrective measures in place.

We appreciate your patience and understanding, and we'll
add as much as we can, as soon as we can.

As Far as Ski/Board Conditions... Hard Icy Fast with Hazards
and 20 (*) Open Trails, 24 hours after there were almost 90 Open
Trails yesterday.

So comparatively, today is not a pretty picture.

Statistically, we might have a day like this once every year or two.

The Snow in the base HAS NOT GONE ANYWHERE. There may be
Hazards and glitches, but you don't lose all that snow just because
you had warm rain for a few hours one day. The Trail Closures
are for Safety, Preservation and the wise management of the precious Base.

Our estimate is that the Summit did not go above freezing for more than
about 90 minutes, if even, and only by a degree or two. The kicker with
all this is that Mother Nature has had her "Blow Dryer" on "High" throughout.
That may be the biggest source of trouble when the forensic's are over.

While 95%, at least figuratively speaking, of the snow is still exactly where
it was before, the Surface Conditions are what will be Completely Different
than yesterday.

We think we'll be facing a minimum restoration process of 3 days to get
the sense of broadly restored granular top layers. Obviously, there's a lot
of work that needs to be done, so it may need even more time, especially
with the now forecast "Flash Freeze" that is under way right about now.

That's not to say there won't be good Skiing or Boarding though.

Crews will be out Grooming runs like Nansen, P'tit Bonheur, Beauvallon,
Beauchemin and many other examples, so there will be good Skiing/Boarding
out there right this second... but you'll have to explore to locate it.

What can you do???

As fine as the efforts of Crews and Machines are, Mother Nature
Trumps everything every once in a while, all we can do is cope
and move forward with the tools available.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
