T360 Apres Ski attached Below in “Reply” @ 8:00 P.M.

------------------- 7:57 A.M. Orig. Post ----------------------

63(*) Open Trails On The Freshly 10cm’s Snowed On, Gusty Windy, A Wee Bit KKkkool...
Slopes Of #Tremblant.

--------- Mid Morning Update: ---------------

Much of the North is somewhat sheltered from the wind and in those locations
there is definite Solar Warmth. The Skiing is Very Fine, Smooth, and
characterized by our Fans out there right now as “Firm, Quite Fast and just
enough in the top layers to carve."

-------------------------- End of Update ------------------------------

Yesterday and today are Complex, Highly Variable, Very Unpredictable
Weather Conditions(primarily Wind related today), that are exactly the
reason Lift or Trail “Changes May Occur Without Prior Notice”.

From +5C to -3C at South Base in around 5 hours during Open Hours yesterday
made for a lot of change as you can imagine, but not surprising to Experienced
Tremblant Fans, despite the fact that there were a few icy bits evolving, there
was Very Fine Carving within the Groomed Trails ALL DAY.

Basically, it was “Spring” and drizzle in the morning, then quite quickly became
“Winter” with a lot of rapid Snowfall that started between 1:30 and 2:00 P.M. and
kept Snowing ‘till well after midnight as the Temp’s dropped like a stone.

Above: This has to be one of the most reliable qualities of this Mountain, that in our
experience shows that Regardless Of Weather... there are always “Sweet Spots”
of technically Fine Skiing within the Open Terrain. Yesterday was no exception...
and neither will be today. However... today will present the additional challenge of
a combined wind and starting temp of -20 C that is going to require particular
attention to dressing for the weather detail.

With specific regard to today’s “Sweet Spots”, we think there will be vast expanses
of Very Sweet Terrain due to the fact that of the initially indicated 63(*) Open Trails,
100% are Groomed as listed in the Official Open Trail Data. This represents a very large
dedication of Labour and Machine Time and the quality we think you’ll see today
after the previous few days of Weather Drama will reflect that dedication.

The Gusty nature of the wind could create Lift Issues, so you’ll need to stay
flexible in terms of where and/or how to get to any of your intended destinations.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,

There are several Important Theme’s in today’s Apres Ski and we want to
start with this one because when you realize it’s significance in relation to
the overall perspective of this seasons conditions, it highlights a major point
that we frequently re-enforce about Tremblant’s inherent Latidude/Location
Advantage.

First Apres Ski Theme:

Conversation in the Gondola Today...

“We drove up from New Hampshire a couple of days ago and we didn’t see any Snow
on the entire trip until we were North of The Border.”

This is a very, very big point. Conditions here are not perfect because a day ago it was
+5C and raining and then it goes down to -20C so it’s not hard to understand why there’s
an “Icy” component in the conditions, but the underlying foundation is TON’S of
Very Evident, Very Deep, Snow!

The Point Is... The Perspective Is... “Icy” is way better than “Gone”.

“Icy” can be recovered to a large extent in a couple of nightly Grooming cycles.
“Gone” can not be recovered by any human efforts...
especially when much of
the North-Eastern Region of the Continent below the St. Lawrence River has
been well above the freezing mark for significant periods of recent time.

One way we like to express it is “Thank Goodness for North, as in Latitude,
because “North” usually has an advantage over “South” when it comes to
“Winter””. This is a very critical element when the temps are floating right
around the freezing mark as they have been off and on over the last few
weeks, and “Tipping Points” of Snow or Rain can be decided by a handful
of degrees and a couple of hundred miles of Latitude. It has been a critically
important point a number of times previously this season too. Advantage...”North”,
Advantage... Tremblant.

The consistently, ever-so-slightly cooler Tremblant Northern Latitude has allowed
both the formation and retention of a well established and resilient Base, as well
as a steady build-up that has recently exploded into record setting short-term
accumulation, all facilitated by that handful of degrees C sub-zero, which just happens
to be in the range Mother Natures own best Snowmaking Temperatures.

The “Trump Card” of “Winter” is “Cold” as in Sub-zero, and so far, Tremblant
has had that in “Spades”.

The whole point of mentioning that first is to identify that for which we should
be very Appreciative, Tremblant does have a great Base and loads of Snow.
A few days of fixing “Icy”, something that occurs in any normal season anyway,
is no problem for Tremblant’s accomplished, Best In Canada East, Grooming and
Mountain Op’s Team.

Below:

Within 18 hours of what ended up to be a 25 Degree C Drop in temps from +5C,
Mountain Crews have already created some very fine Carving Terrain.

So then, once you acknowledge that as Tremblant Fans, we’re lucky to be having
this rapidly developing build up of Snow.... the “Icy Bits” that are temporary and should
be fairly quickly assimilated by more natural Snow and Grooming, all of a sudden
seem less important when compared to “Gone” or “Just not there” as many of our
neighbours to the “South” currently have to contend with.

Second Apres Ski Theme:

Dealing with the Temporary Icy Bits...

Recently we wrote: If you’re not bringing Sharp Edges to the Mountain, it’s like
bringing a Pea Shooter to a Gun Fight.

That sure was the case today. There were several Pitched sectors of very sheer “Icy”,
and without Sharp Edges, they would have been close to dangerous.

There were several sectors, like the “Nansen” Pic. Above, where the top layers
are not yet to ideal depth, so while carving is possible, it’s not the deep edge
trenches we’re used to making in softer substrates.

Here’s a close up of those carved turns with the Razor Sharp, 165 Cm’s, Atomic
D2 Race SL’s that made them, inserted into the pic. for scale reference.

Third Apres Ski Theme:

Sweet Spots Within The Open Terrain

There were also many sectors of good carving with just enough depth in the
top layers to have functional Lateral Grip and hold an edge. On days like today,
it’s been our opinion that one should explore to find those Sweet Spots of
Performance, then stick with them, as if in Training Mode, and be content to
enjoy your entire day safely within a smaller, but still high quality, domain.

Forth Apres Ski Theme:

The Value of Mountain Info Crews When Conditions
have a “Dynamic” Status.

The Open Trail List is “Dynamic”, meaning almost constant daily changes,
there can also be Changes in the Lift hours too, so when you need to clarify
any Mountain Utility Function... ask the very well informed and co-ordinated
Mountain Info? Crews with their distinctive “?” uniforms. If they don’t know,
they can Radio someone who does.
