First Tracks on Expo...
Basically the Mountain Grooming Crews were able to restore a substantial
square area to good, functional, Carving standards this morning. That allowed
athletic performance on almost all the “Progressively Opened” groomed terrain.
A few glitches, the odd Icy Bits, but considering all the Weather Drama
of recent days... WoW... nice work...
The Expo pic. above was typical of the Groomed, loose, Carve-able, easy to turn
on top layers.
A combination of traffic and warming temps did eventually allow mogul formations
on the steeper slopes, but the pervasive softness that yesterday had was just not
there today, so on the whole, it was definitely an improved and dare say, more
Winter-Like Ski Experience.
The initially granular, somewhat course machine generated particle sizes
are common for the first day of a Post-Thermal Event, and we would anticipate
that because there was still some crispness in the surfaces at Last Run, that
tomorrow’s First Tracks will be even better as tonight’s second grooming pass
on a firmer base should yield finer snow top layers.
Tomorrow’s Weather Forecast Is Included in todays Weather Notes, posted below,
but “Sunny” is on the menu, so we think it’s going to look like this again...

Starts Out Frozen due to Overnight -11 C, or so that it got down to on the
Mountain last night, and ends up Soft, but we’re not sure quite how
much Soft(**), as the day progresses into the “Plus”, above freezing temp. zone
at around 10:00 A.M.
(**) Yesterday was roughly 12 Degrees C cooler than the high of the two days
before(including sustained 24hr “+”) , but the snow surfaces yesterday ended
up far softer than the firmer and faster snow of Thursday though, which might
seem contradictory.
Our Theory is that the durability of the minus 20’s C Frost in the base from the last
few weeks had exactly enough “Momentum”, for lack of a better term, to go until
yesterday, when the combinations of three days of “Warm” and rain, finally generated
enough thermal energy to overwhelm the top layers.
We further theorize that now we are back into a more typical Overnight Sub-Zero
pattern, some of that base firmness may be restored, or at least prevent significant
additional thawing from the top down.
Coverage Remains at Very High Levels of Completeness, i.e., “Wall-To-Wall”...
as there’s just so much snow here from all the recent Blizzards and the 2 Metres
of Snow that fell in the last month.
As long as we can hang onto some good, crisp, overnight Sub-Zero’s, we feel
this coverage can extend for a few weeks forward... PLUS... there’s still
the Statistical Probabilities of More Seasonal Snowfall. It would be very rare
indeed, if there was not one or two good old March Snow Storms that seem to
materialize every season, so we look forward to this possibility as well.
