You Don’t See This Every Sunny Day!
The Unique Atmospheric Parhelia Phenomenon, also referred to as “SunDogs”
ZZzzaaappp! You Got Light-Rayzzzz! Billions and Billions of Trillions of Atmospherically suspended ice crystals floating
around creating a prismatic effect as the natural suns rays get refracted through them.
(Please Note: More on the Parhelia SunDog Tomorrow Morning,
we have a T360 Fan Picture to process that’s more of the complete
circle than ours...)
It seemed to be the only thing that actually stopped people in their tracks to
see and take pic’s of, and there were dozens of folks around every corner
with Cellphones and Cameras doing their best to frame up pic’s while it lasted.
Those Ice Crystals came from the Cloud that off and on, surrounded the
Summit and other upper level Mountain Contours just about all day.
The above shows somewhat of the nature of the variable moving cloud that
swirled around upper Mountain levels. Sometimes it was thick, sometimes thin
or not at all, but the airborne crystals seemed to be evident regardless.
The Above also shows the state of Snowmaking on McCulloch’s upper pitch
which is quite expansive. Mid McCulloch is not so well covered, so we imagine
the active guns may be shifted down-slope next.
The New and pre-existing Snow have been blended in and groomed to generate
very high quality in all open trails. The best way to describe the Carving performance
is with this:
Above:
We doubt very much if there’s a competent Skier alive that does not instantly
recognize the outright turning force that is demonstrated here and we estimate
this to cover about 90 some-odd percent of all the Open Terrain at Tremblant
right now. If you’ve got gear in reasonably sharp tune, you can do this all day.
And... This is on Nansen, a “Blue” Intermediate run, so not only can experts
do their thing when its safe without traffic, but all those folks working their
way up the Skills ladder, can practice here too. “Forgiving” would be a term
we’d use to describe the Groomed Snow Surfaces.
We were right about Nansen Haut, “S”, the gentle side, the easier slope to the
right of the pitch(descending), being Open “Soon”, it was Open today.
There was one slick, borderline icy bit there, right down the centre, for about
50 metres or so, but considering the Traffic Volume there today, that was
understandable. Grooming should fix that tonight and with reduced weekday
attendance tomorrow it will likely be good all day.
Re: Versant Nord, the North Side.
The Sun is at close to it's lowest yearly point in the Sky now, so Versant Nord,
the North Side, gets shadowed by the Summit not long after lunch. The shade
allowed the surfaces to remain very cool and crisp all day, keeping a lot of last
night’s -9C, and the snow underfoot felt dry and fast. Very fine “Winter”.
The views were surreally beautiful.
It may look like Special Effects, but it’s not. Atmospheric Ice Crystals filtered the
reflected sunlight off the distant hills and it all seemed to blend into the blue shadows
farther down these gorgeous slopes at Tremblant.

More Later, if time permits... As Mentioned above...More on the Parhelia SunDog
Tomorrow Morning, we have a T360 Fan Picture to process that’s more of the complete
circle than ours...
Also...it’s a big week coming up, but the first two days will be fairly quiet, so go if you can.

9(*) Open Trails on the Freshly Snowed, Newly Expanded, Open Terrain At #Tremblant.
If You Want Great Skiing, If You Want Great Boarding....
You Should Be Racing Over To Tremblant.
We Expect Tremblant to be a More Refined, Consistent and Easy Ski/Board
Experience today due to the Overnight Grooming Cycle and the overnight
-9C chill that should have dried out some of the snow’s internal humidity.
Too Much White???
Never at a Ski Resort!
Newly Opened Nansen to Mi Chemin/TGV Quad Circuit.
Intense Snowfall and High Velocity Blowing Wind present “Challenges” for Photography,
so this is all you get for this portion of the Newly Opened Nansen from yesterday
because standing on the crest you see here in front of you, it was impractical to
deploy camera facing into driven snow coming straight at you. Lens was instantly
plastered with smeared snow blast and no pics possible. The Skiing in this sector
however was fantastic for a Nansen Opening as there has been enough natural snow
to open it with a wider track over and down the pitch than might be typical for
Nansen’s very first day of a new season.
It was possible to do full tilt, fully angulated, aggressive carving over the whole
descent and we predict there will be a lot of Race Training Coaches with their
teams on Nansen today because of that.
The second bit of useful info. from this pic. is the presence of Snowmaking on
the more gentle side of Nansen Haut, Upper, that you can see in the above,
branching off to the right. For Intermediates and especially for Beginners, the
development of the smooth, more shallow descent of that side of Nansen will
be a most welcome addition to the “Green”, easiest descent inventory.
Rumour’s are that Nansen Bas, Lower, is also under Snowmaking development.
That will be a major step forward logistically speaking, as it is the only other
way for all traffic to get to the Sud, South Resort Base, but particularly
important for Beginners owing to the easy nature of the whole Nansen pathway.
Over On The Nord, North Side...
Newly Opened Rope Tow to La Traverse/Beauchemin to Lowell T. Triple Circuit.
Newly Opened "Rope Tow”, descending down to “La Traverse” is also in
a more developed state than initially typical with all the the natural snow.
The finished width of Rope Tow over the main upper crest is almost at
full winter widths. The only part missing from the pic. below, is the ungroomed
crest descending right under the Lowell.T Triple Chair. There are some
rocky outcroppings under that snow cover that do not have enough coverage yet.
There is also Snowmaking gear set up on the Lowell Thomas Trail that runs
parallel to Rope Tow. It looks very possible that side may be open soon as there
is a wall-to-wall White Winter coverage visible there now.
Below: The “La Traverse” Pitch has fluffy soft sides and an icy centre because
of the Side-Sliding traffic who may not be at the “Expert” Skill Level this trail’s
Black Diamond rating is for.
The Skier pictured above at the centre of the pitch is an actual Expert who is
demonstrating ideal edge and speed control here, but we can tell you for a fact
that this kind of performance over that surface is only possible with very freshly
tuned edges.
Other Excellent Snowmaking Terrain Development News:
We are very pleased to see the Versant Nord, North Base Web Cam back on-line!
This is one of the most valuable conditions diagnostic elements when you can’t
actually be over there early morning before opening.
In addition to a healthy looking amount of “White” over the lower Expo Sector,
what we see here is the entire Beauchemin descent pathway being constructed
down to the Duncan Quad. Many, many Tremblant fans, including, but not limited to,
Lac Superieur and other Nord residents who save a lot of driving by using the Nord,
North Base, are excited about having this access available as soon as possible.
Weather Notes:
Starts out at a cool -9C at Summit Level, rising to about -5C with a Sud, South
Base Temp up to -1C. A Sunny Sky and moderate NW winds that will be coming
up the Mountain over Nansen, but hopefully with less velocity than they had yesterday.
There will be an improvement in user friendly just from not having to face into Snow
Blast. As much as we need every precious snowflake, facing into them at high speed
is challenging for Goggles and Skin, not to mention photography, so we’re happy not
to have that to contend with today.
We’ll have a look at the Long Range tonight in Apres Ski, but at this stage, the next
week that sees big, big, preparations for the upcoming 24 Hour Children’s Charity
Fundraiser, shows a lot of promise for Snowmaking production, along with some
Natural Snow in the forecast as well.
We think it’s possible that within a week to 10 days, you may see the Open Trail
Count Triple in numbers from now. We could be wrong for any number of reasons,
but for sure the numbers will be going way up, so if your trying to make plans
to get out over the near future, we support and encourage you to make every
effort you can. Everything that has been opened, has come on-line at high
surface quality and we’ve been enjoying great technical Skiing for all Skill Levels
right from day 1.
