12/14/16 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Apres Ski Intro @ 9:30 P.M.

There are several possible, all very important Tremblant themes that could
Headline tonight’s Apres Ski, BUT...

The Big Winner Has To Be...

The Excellent Opening Of Duncan, Summit-To-Base, Day 1.

We think it’s possibly the Best Day 1 Opening of Duncan in at least 8 to 10 Years.

It Might Even Be The Best Day 1 Opening Of Duncan, EVER.

Normally, a First day Trail Opening has course sized particles, even chunky bits...
None of that on Duncan today. Smooth, Fine and even sized Snow particles from
Summit to Base. Duncan was as good today as any close-to perfect mid-Winter day.

Normally, a First day Trail Opening may have some small, variable, icy or slick elements.
None of that on Duncan today. Smooth, reliable traction and ultra-grip carving that
could hold aggressive edge-sets for as long as you had muscle. Our experience was
based on the use of Atomic SL9, 160cm Non-FIS Slalom Race Skis with an 11 Metre
Turning Radius that have about 14 days since last Machine Tuned.

Normally, a First day Trail Opening can have Natural Hazards that may be a reflection
of early season, shallow base depth. There is always some likelihood that debris can
get worked up through to the surface. We did not personally experience any debris
what-so-ever. Of course it’s possible that the lines we chose in our Duncan descents
today missed debris that may have been there somewhere, but we never saw it.

As we said above, it was the best Duncan First Day Opening we can ever recall.

It’s almost hard to imagine that a Trail as long as Duncan could be produced
to such a uniform standard of Excellence from the Summit to the Base.

Super, Super, Super Fine Effort on the part of Tremblant Mountain Op’s!

And that’s not the end of the Great Tremblant News today either...
some highlights are...

Open Trail List Increased Mid-Morning from 24 to 29.
Jasey-Jay, Open!
Banzai, Open!(#)
Marie-Claude Asselin, Open-Top!(#)
Devils River, Open!(#)
Beauvallon Bas under Snowmaking Re-fresh.
Johannsen at South Resort Base restored to full dimension following 24Hr. Event.
Nansen Bas Under Snowmaking.

((#)Trail Opened in Raw, Ungroomed Form With Posted Ski Patrol Caution Warnings.)

MORE FRESH SNOW OVER EVERYTHING!

So Then, Let’s Take A Closer Look At Today’s Tremblant Snow:

Cold-Formed in cooler Atmospheric Winds Aloft, Fine, as in small, very dry, crisp,
granular, high performance grip/edge hold and really, really... FAST, very low friction,
very easy glide, quick manoeuvring, forgiving, soft cushion, easy braking, and Wonderful
Winter White Snow!

(Please Note: Today’s light was poor contrast, Snow-Fog, Driven-Snowfall,
Blowing Snow, Snowmaking Foggy, Driven, Blowing Particles, White-out,
Overcast, Generally less than Ideal for distance Photography, but Generally
EXCELLENT for Snow.)

Tremblant’s Great Terrain was not restricted to the New North Trails either.
Our Nansen descent today is only one Sud, South Side example of the same snow
as the North has, and, with the same top level performance and ease of control.

You can’t really see it here, but this scene had swirling, mini-tornadic, Snow-funnel
formations moving up and across the trail on a constant basis. The wind at the Summit
and on the South side was strong, sometimes howling and it was the wind
that made it seem cold, not the temps that were hovering around Minus 8C.

More in the morning and we’ll be discussing the Devils River Nord, North Side
trail opening that’s in a raw, un-groomed state as an example of un-groomed trails.

ALSO>>> “BUNDLE UP ALERT” ... it’s going to be KKkkkkooool for the next 2 days...
“Winter-Like” at between -16C and -25C. The Skiing Will Be Fantastic!
All you need to do is be prepared.

Between 15 to 20 Cm’s of New Fresh Snowfall over the last 36 hours or so, has
significantly enhanced Tremblant’s Open terrain for all Skill Levels.

The reason we say “between 15 to 20 Cm’s” is because the stat’s for the last 2
24 hour periods are 11 and 12cm’s respectively, but.... the bulk of it came within
36 hours and the wind shaped the deposits in variable depths. So, despite an Official
statistic, we respectfully submit that with any measuring device you have, the way
it gets put on the ground is almost never at the statistical depth. Furthermore,
there are specific Sectors at Tremblant that routinely benefit with Larger than
Stat. Depths due to “Prevailing Winds” that usually come from the Sou-West,
and cause significant drifting in recognizable patterns over the Summit and
as in this case, on to upper portions of the North.

In last nights Apres Ski, we wrote about the importance of the Versant Nord,
North Side Trail Opening “Axle” for precisely the reasons discussed above
and there are Drift-in contours there that are substantially over the Stat.

If you look at the right side of the Axle pic. from yesterday above, you will see how
the snow is “Bridging” or filling in between the lower tree boughs and the trail surface.
There is some of that on the left side, but to a far lesser extent, and basically,
if you scale that up to the whole North Side of Tremblant, you begin to see
what’s happening everywhere in this sector. There will be many who think
this is trivial, but all you need to remember is that Winter Conditions are
all about “Accumulations”. By it’s very definition, “Accumulations” means
incremental increases, bit by bit, and when you take these recognizable
accumulations day by day, week by week, and add them all up... we’re
right in the middle of the process that helps to shape and define our Tremblant
Ski Season.

When it comes to the part Mother Nature plays with the Natural Snow Component,
at least anecdotally speaking, we’d have to say we’re well above average on
that score.

If you are Sitting in the Beautiful County of Surrey in the U.K., if you’re sitting
in Washington D.C., or Hamilton Ontario... with a focus on an upcoming Tremblant
Family Ski Holiday... this is exactly the kind of news you want to be getting.
If you’re sitting in Ottawa wondering about coming for the weekend, this is
exactly the kind of news you want to be getting. The comfort is in the firmly, well
established foundation of the Alpine Snow Sport Trail Network Infrastructure that
is increasing in quality and quantity daily, and will mature into a Classically Fine
Tremblant Season.

Back To Today’s Realities...

Continuing on with the descent path extending from Axle, we chose Rigodon
to head back towards Beauchemin Bas, Lower.

12.13.16.Rigodon.Views.Beauchemin.Bas.Lower.Across.Lowell.Thomas.Base.d.jpg (567.12 KiB) Viewed 2428 times
Rigodon has great early season surfaces from side to side. It’s just wide enough
to allow traffic to spread out and that is a big asset in all-day durability because
there’s far less turning, sliding, scraping stress on the trails centre, and that
means good, solid, grip traction over smooth, uniform surfaces for the whole descent.

Rigodon was a prime example of a great Tremblant “Sweet Spot” yesterday.

We can’t wait to find where some of those are today, and... there should be
more today than yesterday from nothing other that the benefit of an overnight
Grooming cycle that should have rendered out more even surfaces over the
freshly snowed-on slopes.

Weather Notes:

A fair degree cooler today with Sud, South Base level high at -9C.
The Summit will likely see around -13C or so as a high temp mark, but...
That lower temp may seem even cooler with the moderate to strong
gusty South to Sou-West Winds, so it’s critical to be bundled up a bit
to keep those pesky drafts from getting inside garment layers.

The “Breezes” will be largely coming across the Summit from the Soleil Sector
towards Lowell Thomas and Beauchemin, so we could once again see some
wind driven snow movement and drift-in towards the upper North sectors.

Tremblant Guests are finding a “Back To Normal” utility in the Resort
Base after the busy 24 Hr Children’s Charity Fundraiser. With Nansen Bas
under Snowmaking, it won’t be long now before this sector is fully functional
from both descent paths that end up here.
