1/12/17 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360, Late Night Apres Ski Edit @ 11:30 P.M.

The View From Your Gondola Cabin...

Foggy, to say the least...
but there’s a big, and very positive surprise waiting at the top(**)...

The day began with the Forecasted Foggy-Rain, but that ended around noon
depending where you were, as we understand the North Cleared off first.

From there is was Cloud Fog, but zero precipitation, and we had
another instance of what we have previously called.. “Dry Fog”
for almost the whole afternoon. There was at least one Fog-Free
Zone, the “Expo” Sector Peak, and below.

It Started Snowing At Tremblant a few minutes after 3:00 P.M.
and portions of the Summit became Sub-Zero at very close to
the same time.

People were whining about Vision, but we had our Speed-Curved Yellow-Lens,
Open Frame, Industrial Safety Glasses that we’ve coated with “Rain-X”
and it just goes to show that with a very simple item, and one commonly available
at almost any Hardware Store, it seems like almost Zero Fog with the right
foul-weather Vision gear. This is an incredibly simple and easy fix for Foggy
Flat, low contrast light conditions anywhere near Zero or Above C.

(**)Even more incredible to some will be our assessment that today was one of
the finest High Performance Expert Carving days of this Season.
The immaculate
Grooming facilitated Full-Tilt Edge Set on virtually every square metre of Open,
Groomed Terrain. The amount of Lateral G-Force turning grip was astounding
and complete, from Summit-To-Base... everywhere.
Another perfect example of
a weather report that scares people off, when the reality is that conditions are
Excellent. You can never close the door on fine conditions at Tremblant.

For tomorrow morning, the Temps are falling down to -10C by sunrise
and falling further to -13C, by 1:00P.M. Winds Strong, and Nor-West,
so coming up the Mountain over Beauvallon.

Bundle up and Enjoy Very Fine Technical Skiing.

The fact that Tremblant Mountain Crews had todays slopes almost perfectly
Groomed will be the fundamental element in whatever is Open Tomorrow,
so fear not, there will be Sweet Spots, regardless of the raw Open Trail number.

PLUS... Sunny!?!?!

It’s Just One Of Those Days...

Despite the temporary and minor inconvenience...

This Is A Totally Normal Seasonal Temp/Precip. event.
It actually has benefits for the Mountain
and all Guests, Today and Moving Forward(**)...

Firstly, the Skiing and Boarding today may quite possibly be Excellent.
At the least it will be very, very fine where-ever Mountain Crews have
current, overnight last night Grooming.

The combination of Warm, “Plus” Temp's by a couple of degrees on Mountain
Elevations and any rain should produce “Spring-Like” surfaces of Superb
Carving Excellence.

The recent -30C mornings in addition to the pre-existing overall Sub-Zero Winter
that the Mountain has been exposed to, should render out a shallow, but
potentially very high performance, top layer of Shred-able Snow that on those
freshly Overnight-Groomed Open Trails today, should be virtually Glitch-Free Flawless.

With Over 325cm’s of Season-To-Date Natural Snowfall...

It would literally take weeks of this kind of weather to materially affect
Open Groomed Trails to any significant degree. The worst of any of this,
if you can call it that, may be the short-lived icy transition back to normal
winter temps in about 10 hours from now, however, even that may not be
too bad if the Forecasted Snow for tonight occurs concurrently with the
drop in temps.

Any Time the Temp’s drop from Plus to Sub-Zero can obviously generate ice,
but when there’s Natural Snowfall at the same time, the moist surface simply
acts as an adhesive layer that instantly bonds Falling Snow to itself and the build-up
becomes an integral cushion over what will re-solidify in the strata below.

That’s Fine With Us...

Otherwise, the biggest Cosmetic Difference is going to be the loss of
“Snow In The Trees”, but that will come back with future snowfall and
frankly, the poor trees need a break from being broken by Snow-Load
weight. Hors Piste, Sous Bois, Adventure Ski/Boarders will verify...
the bush is full of broken trees from the massive weight of Snow.
That may be even more apparent today if rain saturates tree snow before
it can melt it off.

The Specific Advantages Of This Wet Weather To Tremblant Now.(**)

The last week has seen over 40cm’s, a foot and a half, of fresh, new Snowfall.
There has been so much that with all this past weeks Snow in addition
to recent weeks accumulations, we have seen moguls more frequently
and in more areas than normal on the Groomed Terrain, simply because
the Compaction Rate is difficult to achieve when it just keeps on snowing
new snow before the previous snow can get optimal packing into the base.

Mogul formations on P’tit Bonheur are a prime example. You Know there’s
a lot of Fresh at Tremblant when P’tit Bonheur gets mogul’s. Normally, it’s
as Smooth and Flat as any Golf Course Fairway, even with above average snowfall.
When there’s been this much, it just takes more cycles of 12,500 Lbs. Grooming
Machine passes to get that traffic resistant density and consequent easy
all-day flatness so ideal for Beginners/Intermediates. But... in this case,
it’s just been Snowing and Snowing and Snowing some more and “Catching Up”
for “Packing” has been offset by "Snowing Some More” X “Multi”!
That’s a “Happy Problem” at a Ski Resort!

Anyway, what a damp “Plus Temp.” day can do is accelerate the Surface Density
factor... instantly. That instant density increase can be rendered into the base
in the very next Grooming Cycle thereby providing an immediate “Catch-Up”
and as well, an enhanced Base Foundation with a Strata that upon re-solidifying,
should be a benefit component to BOTH base durability and Quality for the remainder
of the Season.

Weather Notes:

Warm ’n Wet @ up to +5C by noon, and light rain for the balance of
Open Hours today. Then, Temps falling back into Sub-Zero range by
around 9:00 P.M. tonight, with possible Snowfall at the same time.

Winds Light to Moderate Westerly, so crossing the Summit from over Taschereau,
headed towards Lowell Thomas.

The “Rain Icons” for today are shown as Light. What that can mean are 2 usual
precip. patterns that are either Drizzle and/or passing bands of light rain traversing
over Mountain Topography. With the latter, passing bands of light rain over the Mountain
can actually leave sectors either periodically or all-day dry.

More on all at Apres Ski...

Page Under Slightly Soggy, A Wee Bit Foggy, Definitely Damp
and Technically Excellent Spring-Like, Progressive Assembly.

Yellow Lens Advisory...

After a week with some -30C Open’s... at least it’s Warm???
