4/9/17 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Middle Of The Night Shift Apres Ski Edit
and partial draft of tomorrow’s report:

Please accept our apologies for delays in Apres Ski posting.
Unexpected Logistical issues prevented processing, however
we are pleased to report that it turned out to be another
very fine Spring Skiing day at Tremblant with the main
attribute of “Gravity Offset By Soft Surfaces”, meaning
that due to the extra resistance of Super-Soft Spring Snow,
you could face the Fall-line directly on steeper pitches
and that made them quite easy to navigate.

Of course, it started out solid from the overnight Sub-Zero,
but that pretty much disappeared by 11:00 A.M.when the
total Thermal sources of Sun and Air had softened everything.

There are 2 main points we want to include for the record
supported with the following pic’s.

Above: The important thing to note in this one is
the “White” that is visible on all the Trails and more
importantly, the white that is evident in the Bush.
If you looked at all the Mountain Panoramic’s from
this date in all the previous seasons in this record,
there are not many with this amount of overall retained
Snow. By now, most normal years are still showing “White”
Trail surfaces, but a lot of “Brown” in the Bush.

Below: The Second important thing to note is the depth
of the Trail-Side Snow-pack, i.e., how deep is that Snow
in the Bush. This is an excellent indicator of the overall
status of what’s left of “Winter”, in-so-far-as the melted
loss of coverage both on and off Trails.

Please Note the Ski Pole on the Left Screen-side. All you can see is the hand-grip.
The rest of the 120cm’s/48 inch pole, is buried straight into the Trail-Side Bush
Snow-Pack, meaning that in this Versant Nord, North Side, mid-Lowell Thomas
area, the ambient depth of snow in the Bush is still close to 4 feet.

For April 9th, that’s amazing. There are some seasons where this is
bare ground by this date, or if there is still snow, it may only be a few
inches or Cm’s, a fraction of what we see here now.

Bottom Line:

An exceptional Closing Sequence of days for Tremblant’s Winter Season with
a tremendous residual amount of snow on both Trails and in the Bush that has
resulted in far above average durability in BOTH Coverage and Surface Quality.

--------- 10:25 A.M. Mid-Morning Update ----------

Please Note:

At Versant Nord, North Side Summit Level Elevations,
there is still Snow in the trees, a very significant indicator
of Surface stability below as it’s not yet “Warm Enough” to
melt off the un-insulated tree boughs that are super-sensitive
to both air and solar heat.

---------- Original Post Below ------------

Starts out at -3C, and very quickly rising to “+” C before 9:00 A.M.,
then moving almost as quickly up to +13C by just after lunch.
We also think it has the potential to exceed the forecasted high,
particularly if the wind component stays low.

Yesterday’s "Partially Sunny" added tremendous Sky Drama
with the spectacular contrast between the deep blue and
the rapidly evolving cloud formations. For most of the day
today, this scene should be cloudless, however the intensity
of direct solar energy and warmer air masses may reduce
some of the great speed we had in all these surfaces... Wax For “Warm”!

Yesterday’s partially cloudy actually meant “Shaded”,
over trails, so it helped contribute to all-day cool, fast surfaces.

There will be loads and loads of Excellent Cruising Terrain
on “Green’s” and “Blue’s”....

This Versant Nord, North Side example, “Sissy Schuss” enjoyed
a slower rate of thaw due to it’s naturally shaded slopes that
never get the intensity of the mid-day sun. The Carving traction
here was a bit icy/slick first thing, as it will be today also, but
as soon as the Air temps soften the top layers, the carving here
became exceptional as the frost below prevented it from becoming
too soft. We expect similar benefit for Versant Nord, North Side slopes
for much of the day today, as well. It might not last all day the way it did
yesterday because of the higher daytime high, but relatively speaking
it should continue to be an advantage.

And.... Loads and Loads of Mega-Mogul Soft Spring Bumps![/b]

Below: We were lucky to catch this Expo Mid-Air Mogul Jump
from the Expo Quad. Obviously an Expert, this talented
Skier was carrying quite a bit of speed and using momentum
combined with mogul sides as ramps to make every turn in the air!

It may be difficult to perceive from this pic., but the Skier
is actually about 20 inches/50 cm’s in the air over the
valley between the moguls here. An impressive display
of serious Expert technique!

In this pic. below, you can see the softness as well as the
new snowfall from over Friday night that contributed to
the overall cushion of the surfaces. The wind had moved
much of the snowfall into the valley’s between the bumps,
so there was an added amount of grip/traction that enhanced
what would have normally been icy bits.

Wax or Coat Ski/Board Bases With “Warm” Temp Range Material.

Thawing, Saturated Surfaces can generate Hydrodynamic Drag,
so ANY type of appropriate Ski/Board Base treatment can vastly improve
Glide and reduce the effort to traverse plateau’s, run-out’s or contour
dips where moisture can be concentrated.
