It was a day of greater challenge than we anticipated,
so while there were many zones of good conditions,
the point we made in the original post below about
shallow top layers camo’d over slick or icy bits turned
out to be a greater proportion than we thought.
You had to be very careful making the aggressive edge-sets
necessary for real carving technique as loss of traction
could occur in rather random fashion. Jerking or sudden
motions could mean a quick loss of grip. From that
standpoint, it had to be a day of strict technical skills
with slow speeds in order to ensure safe control.
On another note...
Great to see the “Ski Le Gap” program in action, some
of the U.K.’s most dedicated skiers getting even better.
This concentrated Ski Instructor course has been around
for decades and has survived covid and economic factors
to still successfully carry on.

The Summit remained fog-bound all day and while
it did clear below that level, there were swirling
zones of active snowfall that also affected vision
across all open terrain.

There were still a few big bumps on mid-Expo, down by the
Cossak lower run-out. Those may or may not be there in the
finished trail today, but the main thing is that all the waiting
is over for the countless Expo fans out there.

Weather Notes:
Snowing and easy mid-winter temps,
just about perfect for a Ski Resort!
This Mother Nature snowmaking weather profile
is just about perfect for optimal natural production.
So-far, the snow is falling as big, fat, fluffy flakes
that are huge in comparison to the very small, fine
crystals we had when it fell in the recent really cold
spell. This snow has huge “Loft” and we think we
could maybe see some orographic benefit at elevations
that could mean considerably more than the base,
up over the trail network. So-far, the winds are fairly
light too, so it’s settling quite evenly everywhere.

In The Groomed:
The consistent high performance grip levels are running
at about 85% of the finished, freshly groomed surfaces
and what you see below is a very good example.
You Can Safely Do This All Day If You Have The Muscle...

This illustration shows both the very high level of mechanical
grip which you’ll feel as turning traction, as well as the fine
evenness of the groomed surface snow particle size which
you see here in the complete consistency of the displaced
snow-blast trailing off this Pro Ski Patroller's skis.
To Be Objective...
There remain a few stubborn icy zones that you need to
watch out for but they are definitely in patterns that are
predominantly on steeper pitches so for that reason we
recommend that you come to a stop or at least approach
all crests at very slow speed where you can not see the
pitch you are entering well before.
That cautionary approach will be especially critical today
because with a coating of light snowfall occurring, some
of the slick zones may not be visible underneath a thin
layer of snow-camo.
One significant variable/wild card may be the rate and amounts
of natural snowfall that could mitigate some of the icy bits out.
This may be even more beneficial with the higher degree of
internal humidity that could develop an adhesive bond over
slick surfaces. Time will tell, but it looks like great snowball
snow and that’s very positive potential.
Sharp, fresh, well tuned edges are essential. Either get
them done before you arrive, or, when you get here, drop
them off at the Sud/South Cabriolet/Resort Base Ski Shop
for their very excellent overnight tuneup service special.
You’ll be able to pick them up before first tracks and you’ll
be ready for anything.
