Crazy Weather, But Clinically Speaking, Crazy-Good Skiing!

It’s whacky windy, enough to literally push you around,
so with the early temps just touching -20C, the wind-chill
will be in the range of -33C, you’ll need to be ready
for that. It will warm up later on.

While this pic from yesterday at Last Run looks identical to
today, photography does not capture cold so the only
actual difference is -18C!

Weather Notes:

There are some conflicting elements in forecast models,
particularly in the wind speed values. Some are calling
for “Damaging” wind speeds, while the hourly forecast
below shows moderate, even low wind speeds. We’re not
sure how it’s going to end up, but we can tell you that
as this is being written, the wind at the base level is
sufficient to be literally knocking the trees together.

It should be noted that the wind is forecast to reduce
substantially as the day matures and that would be
a very favourable user-friendly factor.

From -1C Warm And Fiercely Windy, To -19C Fiercely Cold And Still Fiercely Windy...

And all In Less Than 7 Hours?

What’s Going On With The Weather?

Here are 2 documents currently circulating with
weather forecasts:

Conditions Notes:

In The Groomed:

If it was possible to be fully prepared and set aside the
obvious practical challenge of facing extreme weather
factors... if...., then from a technical standpoint the skiing
should be fabulous. 12cm’s of fresh cold-formed snow,
integrated into the base that now nicely over the 300cm’s
seasonal marker to reach 315cm’s this morning is certainly
going to enhance the finished product, but with one big,
basic proviso... wind shaping.

Wind shaping has shown itself to be quite capable of
having erosive force in places that can cause the firm
or in some places, icy base to be exposed. This is primarily
on some upper Sud/South facing pitches where the wind
was naturally focused close to the surfaces by topographical
contours.

On the other hand, there are lee-side sheltered zones,
primary examples on mid Versant Nord/North Side
terrain, where the push of the wind over the top of the
Mountain may have generated backfill drift-in effects
that amplify the snowfall accumulations.

These patterns should be clearly evident with appropriately
cautious initial explorations and we recommend that when
you find sweet spots that work well for you, a great option
is to stick with them and do repetitive descent cycles for
easy training practice.

In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:

In our opinion, Upper Nord/North and Edge Sectors are
most likely to have the advantage of the snowfall push
over the Summit and we think that careful explorations
in these areas could find some amazing drift lines that
might be double the Official total.

Take another look at yesterdays “Proof Of Snow” and add
10/15/20 or more cm’s to that in areas of individual favour.
