The Weather Is The News...

We Got “Sprung” Into “Spring” !

From one extreme to another...

-30 C, 72 hours ago, now at +4 C, That’s a 36 C/93 F Crazy Spread!

Weather Notes:

One very positive indicator for us, specifically for today,
is that even with “+” value temps, there is snowfall in
the hourly forecast icons. What that tells us is that the
air masses above the Mountain are considerably colder
than ground levels and in terms of the next 24 hours
of a return to froze, fresh snow over any degrees of
re-solidified base, is going to help mitigate icy.

Conditions Notes:

In The Groomed:

The 80/20 rule may apply to most of the evenly pitched
slope angles of freshly groomed, where 80 % are good to
very fine and 20% may have weather induced challenge.

The wild card in all of this is the contest between the current
hot ’n wet weather and the previous 2 months of Polar Vortex
that peaked with -30C of 72 hours ago, that is still just below
the surface in the substrates. Due to the “Cold Sinks” side of
the convection circuit, there may be a substrate barrier where
the top warm meets the bottom cold and a layer of froze might
happen that could get exposed with traffic wear.

Look for patterns and by identifying common occurrence,
anticipate potential challenge with proactive speed reductions.

We expect that the single largest pattern is that warm/wet effects
will be most evident from Sud/South base levels and to variable
degrees decreasing, work up to the Summit. This would be consistent
with our overnight observations showing the Summit as warm, but dry.

The cloud ceiling is indicated at very low so there may be challenge
in the vision department that would dictate reduced speeds for
line-of-sight navigation with fog. Yellow lens options for best results.

------- Equipment Caveat: ----------

Bring sharp edges, or better yet if you’re arriving for a School
Break multi-day ski holiday, get them done here at the Ski Shop
at the Cabriolet/P-1 Base.

------------------------------------

All initial explorations should be undertaken with reduced
speeds in order to verify safe passage, particularly over
and just below crests where steeper pitches may exhibit
surface glacial flow patterns. There could be other types
of topographical contours that generate challenge in the
form of slick or icy bits if pooling allows saturations that
span low laying plateaus.

In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:

Two days ago we wrote:

"Looking forward(a), this is the trail group that is most
sensitive, so if the weather actually does what’s
forecast, this is where we could maybe see some
temporary closures at some point."

That is today.

Please Note:
At first tracks there are 16 Sous Bois and 1 Groomed group of trails
on “Progressive” Open status. These trails are not open now, but may
be open pending Ski Patrol confirmations which we would expect to be
somewhere between now and 9:45 or so. Until then, if you do the math,
there are effectively 77(*) open trails.

Regardless of the number of these trails that eventually open, there
may be significant Expert level challenge that requires both patience
and lots of muscle. For example, there are some Hors Piste zones that
had deep loft in the upper strata and going from very dry cold to very
wet warm could present impediments to turning.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

 If you “Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.
