1/29/10 Conditions

Snow, More Snow, then after that, some more Snow.

81 Open trails under brilliantly sunny skies, with a chilly -22C, so
bundle up because an important element in enjoying today will mean
keeping as much body heat in as you can. The wind is from the
North-West, or moving across the Mountain from the Nansen,
P'tit Bonheur sector at the Summit and even though it is forecasted
to be at 15 km, we can tell you that it is gusty and quite a bit faster
than that.

It is critically important that you eliminate any exposed skin today.
Noses, Cheeks, Foreheads can get frostbite in less than 2 or 3 minutes,
depending on wind velocity as you cruise around the Mountain, so pay
attention because if you lose feeling on these skin surfaces, you may
not notice the damage until it is too late.

Gaps around wrists, neck, boot tops, waist and anywhere else you can
think of, will make a HUGE difference. These temps are another
practical/functional reason for wearing a HELMET! If you are not yet
one of the smart people that wears a helmet then get with the program!
Not only are helmets safer, but the layers of external shell, shock
absorbing inner padding and insulation are vastly superior for warmth.

Now, back to basics...
The Skiing and Boarding are going to be fantastic today!

As we closed out the day yesterday, there was a very heavy snowfall
going on all over the Mountain with not too much in the way of wind,
so it was laying down quite a bit of quickly deepening snow. With any
luck, the Mountain Crews will have gotten to most of the terrain and
packed it, because after mid-night, the wind really began to pick up
from the North West and it was gusty enough that it could have moved
a fair amount of snow off of any open exposed surfaces like the big wide
runs of P'tit Bonheur or Beauchemin. Time will tell.

If you want to see what it looked like yesterday at "Last Run" goto
yesterdays conditions report and scroll down to "Replies"... There are
3 large pics there that will show you how it was.

Anyway, if the North West wind could have affected the odd North
side run, it could just as easily benefitted South side runs as a big
portion of the South side would be in the lee, or shelter of the wind
and snow that may have been carried over the top of the Mountain
may well be found on runs like McCulloch, Kandahar, Taschareau and
even upper Ryan. We'll get back later on that.

There is a bunch of Snowmaking going on, so you will need to be
careful around those zones. Watch out for traffic and also try to keep
your goggle lens protected from being covered with blown Snow crystals.

Check out today's copy of the Official, Printable Grooming and Trail status
report, courtesy of http://www.tremblant.ca This is a great document
featuring lots of useful information.

Beside each Trail Name, the "tick" columns show Open, Snowmaking,
and Grooming. The legend at the page bottom gives complete
symbol meanings.

Tons of fresh Snow with genuine Tremblant Winter conditions
equal Great Skiing and Snowboarding with excellent grip.

There are some underlaying areas of icy sub-strata in the high traffic
or wind blown areas on some runs, so please be careful to closely watch
your speed, particularly where you are traveling for the first time.
Unexpected hazards may be covered by thin layers of snow and may
only be found when you are "on top" of them.

Apres Ski End of day update:

Well, it was a wee bit cool today, but very much worth it!
The Quality of our surfaces here is very high.

You can set a very good edge with your skis and you find
exceptional "grip" to carve perfect turns.

These Conditions only exist when the snow is "squeaky" cold
and the result is fabulous skiing! As usual, it helps if you are
dressed properly and if you have your ski or snowboard tuned
up with fresh, sharp edges. Regardless of skill level, there is a
wide variety for everyone from beginner to expert.

Some of the classic old runs that were first cut in 1948 on the
North Side had drifted Powder Snow up to 18 inches deep.

I hope you think this enough snow for you. It may not be Whistler, but Hey, all things considered, we think it's pretty cool!
