FRESH SNOW!
6CM overnight on 45(*) Open Trails.

Proof of Summit Snow.
We love to see snow in the trees!
It means that when it fell, it wasn't too windy
and of course, it's on the trails too!

Getting Back To Normal

With the right raw materials to work with, ie: Fresh Snow!,
the Tremblant Mountain Crews will be able to make
rapid and consistent progress in the quality of
all our Alpine surfaces.

This should be a great week to see the numbers of Open
Trails jump higher day by day.

Ultimately, all the dampness that we've gotten may well
contribute to the durability of our season, just because the
return to sub-zero temps will solidify what we had into a
thicker, deeper base.

Over the last 2 days, grooming has been conducted in stages
that will allow the surfaces to progress toward not only a quality
surface for todays Skiers/Boarders, but future users as well.

It is our understanding(subject to correction from verifiable source),
that by leaving a slightly rough surface on the Mountain when you
expect snow, it gives all the new snow something to bond with.

There are 2 main ways we can think of that benefit surface quality.
The first would be that the new snow can adhere or stick to a roughened
base layer and will be somewhat wind resistant as opposed to falling on
a smooth surface where it may be moved off by wind.
Secondly, when you pack and groom the old and the new, you get a new base
that has an easy to work with transition from the hard below to the soft above.

SKI AND BOARD CONDITIONS:

CAUTION WITH SPEED is mandatory until you have verified
safe passage. The surfaces will be "Fast", but you should not
rip around until you have carefully explored the terrain first.

Today will be a day of mixed conditions that will include
fine carving snow, hardpack, and some icy bits...
There may be other surface characteristics such as natural
hazards in the form of wood or rock that you will need to
watch out for. All these surface features may appear in a
random fashion. The point is, don't assume conditions are
going to be the same over the next bump or around the next turn,
until you have safely verified that with slow, careful examination.

Once you have verified where the best lines and surfaces are, feel
free to work on your performance, but not before.

------ END OF SAFETY MESSAGE -------------

Today's weather starts and stays at around -7C under
partially sunny skies with a moderate west wind that will be
coming up McCulloch and Beauvallon, as it moves across the summit.
Riding the TGV, you should have the wind at your back and below
the summit on the North side, it will be almost calm.

With the wind and snow overnight like this, you may well find
some drifted areas of deeper snow on the North. We would guess
that the North will have the best conditions, generally speaking.

ALWAYS REMEMBER...

TREMBLANT RULE #1:
There will always be good Skiing or Boarding somewhere
within the open terrain at Tremblant. Period.

It's up to you to explore the open trails carefully to match your
selection with your skill level and have fun!

Let's all do the snow dance!

This is just an FYI, I got the official explanation in french to the term "progressive opening" and by official, I mean it's from the Mountain Operation Director himself lol

Merci Gabo!

Here is a "Google Translate" which we know is not perfect, but it does
get the meaning across. We'll try to paraphrase it below to make the
English version a bit more natural.

--------------- T360 English paraphrase ----------------------------------

These Trails are the ones that we think have very good chances of opening
during the day when we look at the weather forecast at the time we are
planning.

During the transition to freezing rain this weekend, the team works at
grooming the effected trails, gradually rebuilding them. We coordinate
our first restoration efforts on trails that are already frozen.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If there is a better way to say it, please correct as needed,
and thank you very much for this contribution.

Back in our "Understanding Trail Counts" feature in the
"Tremblant Geographic" section of our forums, we wrote:

"Some trails may receive a "Progressive" opening status which
means they are anticipated to be opened during the course of that day.
This is a notice to Mountain users that they can look for these openings
and begin to use them when the Patrol takes down the ropes and opens
them up. These openings can be subject to safety or weather factors,
which may cause delays."

We think that all these references are totally compatible.

Yo, Freeskier678...

We're trying to get a confirmation on that.

Were you there today?

The Official http://www.tremblant.ca said 6 CM.
Based on these Web Cam Snap Shots, we think
that's certainly close.

With last nights west wind, typically the North would get more
snow deposited than the South, because it is in the "lee" of
Tremblant's peak on that side. So typically, again, snow fall
measurement by meteorological spec's for the region does not
necessarily fall equally on 180 degree opposite sides of the
Mountain when there is any wind factor at all.

All that above can indicate a drifting factor as well. As the air
currents swirl over the summit they can fill in contours on the North
with much more.

Here's a Pic. example from La Traverse, just below the Rope Tow Jump Line.
Pic. taken Dec.10th,2010. The Official snowfall total for the day before
was 3Cm, but there was heavy drifting, up to as much as 45 cm's on North
trailsides, from a couple of days snowfall totaling and "Official" 16 cm's.
From the heel binding to the end of the ski is over 40cm's and they were
buried in this drift when I took this flip.

We know it hasn't been nearly as much as this pic shows,
it's just a sample of the drifting factor that favours the North
in similar circumstances as we had last night.
