For Saturday's report GoTo: http://tinyurl.com/2vlbv8n

----------------------------------------------------------------
Afternoon Up-Date:

Soleil OPEN

Preview for Saturday looks good too, all 4 sides OPEN!

Unfortunately, there was a major glitch on the South Side
as Flying Mile was off-line and the line for the Gondola got
pretty long. Don't know exactly why, yet, but it's a good reason
to check the Summit Traffic signal to see if all the lifts are
running before you start your descent if you think of it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Additional Info.
Flying mile glitch due to excessive wind load.

The thing with Flying Mile is that it's summit is subjected to
very unusual vortices that hit it from several angles as the
principle volume of air comes over Tremblant's peak, as well as
around the south-west side, basically the length of Charron,
where the forces converge.

While it does not seem like much at the base level, it can be
practically gusting or blowing the chairs sideways at the top
because Trail # 11, Belvedere acts like a ramp for the wind.

Looking down Belvedere, up Charron and at Tremblant's peak
you can see where the wind comes straight at the top of
Flying Mile when it's from the South-east.

This is a very good, legitimate safety reason.
Accidents like the one they had down in New England at Sugarloaf
mere days ago, can, and do(as that one did), happen from this,
so it was the right call.

Quotation from Boston Globe.com

"The State of Maine Board of Elevators and Tramways inspectors believe
high winds, up to 45 mph, were a contributing factor. If you have skied
Sugarloaf, you know it can be blustery."

Any experienced Tremblant skier knows it can be blustery
at Tremblant too.

Besides which, it is our unconfirmed understanding that if the swing
inclination exceeds the manufacturers specifications for lateral deflection
of the chairs into either the upper or lower landing docks, or while crossing
any tower in the entire up or down system, by law they have to shut it down.

If there is a Quebec Lawyer out there that would like to do some
Pro Bono Legal research, it would be interesting to know if that is
actually the case under Quebec Elevating Device Law/Regulations
and we would welcome a verifiable opinion.

Regardless, no one wants to hear about this kind of accident anywhere,
so complainers need to think twice before vocalizing on this one.

Much Better!

56(*) Open Trails

4 Sides, South, North, Soleil(**) and Edge, OPEN!
(**)progressive Ski Patrol gradual opening.

Mountain Crews have managed to put almost 100
acres of Alpine terrain back on the map this week
in addition to maintaining all existing area for a
total Alpine open acreage of over 420.

Here are the behind the scenes "Stars" of the show!
This is one of our favorite file pic's of a typical Apres Ski
scene when the Grooming crews get ready to put fresh
surfaces on all our favorite runs.

What Is "Winch Grooming"? Many people are asking, so we
thought we'd try answering with this:

If you scroll up and down between pic's above and below, you will see
that the second in line groomer above, has a large overhead crane arm going
over the cab. Pic Below is a close-up so you can see detail.
Basically, they secure the cable from the packer/groomer
to a fixed point at the top of the run being "winch groomed"
and use the cable winch on the packer to assist the the travel
of the machine up or down the surface of the run. Reasons to
winch groom could include overall steepness of the run and/or
extra force needed to overcome the resistance of very deep
or heavy snow.

If there are any out there that would like to add to this
"winch grooming" info., please contact us and we'll add it.

This is a tremendous effort and we thank them
for all the 'round the clock dedication!

There are 11 Progressive Ski Patrol trail openings in
todays list and we'll watch and up-date as best we can
but if you're here today, keep an eye out for the ropes
to come down on:
Taschereau
Geant
Boomerang
Devils River
Duncan, Upper and lower
Superieur

...and when Soleil opens
Franc Sud
Toboggan
Tapecul
La Garette

The weather today is partially sunny with temps rising from
-10C to around -7C, but you will not feel much thermal
energy due to moderate/high Easterly winds at up to 25 KPH.
These winds will cross the summit from the top of Superieur,
headed towards Alpine/Nansen.

At these wind velocities you will need to bundle up and make
sure that all potential air gaps around neck, head, wrists, waist
etc., etc. are all well sealed or overlapped to maximize comfort.

The Skiing and Boarding will be improving, however the surfaces are
still very much in recovery mode. There may not be much comfort in it,
but apparently it's like this all over the East Coast. A quick scan of
what's being reported in the New England region for example, turned up
one reference to the "Ice Coast".

Within it's peers, Tremblant scores in the top tier for
groomed surface quality, so the odds are that we have
considerably better conditions than most.

Speed and Safety Caveat In Effect.
There may be hazards within the open terrain
that require caution and avoidance. Explore the
Mountain carefully at a reduced speed until you
can verify surfaces, Before you go ripping around.
Select terrain that is within your skill level and use
caution at all blind contours, intersections, and run-outs.
