3/10/11 Conditions

Post by T360 »

Apres Ski WOW ! ...Preliminary notes, additional to follow.

If you had complaints today you were not an expert, and you were not
on Versant Nord, the North Side.

Here is why:

At 3:00 P.M. when many were complaining of rain on the South,
this what you could find in the ski/board paradise of the North side.

Versant Nord was like this, virtually all day long...

This pic. pretty much sums up the day the conditions, and the happiness
for those experts that knew where to look.

Here's 1 more, just so you have a wee souvenir pic of "Winter"
to look at for a while. Absolutely awesome, fun day.

Unfortunately, it probably won't be the same tomorrow, but even then
the North may hold out with the better conditions or the least rain.

That will not stop the great skiing and boarding however. You will
just need to be prepared with your Descente poncho, which will keep you
almost perfectly dry.

More later, as time permits.

Big, Big "Blowing and Drifting" factors this morning, for sure...

Here's a morning sample less than 4 KM from the Resort Base...
these were pretty much bare after last Sunday's rain, so with blowing,
drifting and just plain snowing, here is what is happening in places...

Not sure what the total is so far, but that is not going to matter nearly
as much as where the wind is/has been moving it to.

This is exactly when the drifting in places will be double or more than the
Official snowfall totals because the snow is light, and the wind is gusty.

That's just fine with us. Tremblant will be a "Ton 'o Fun" to explore for that
very reason. There will be many, many powder lines of unusual dimension
and location and we can't wait to get out there to find them![/b]

It looks like this could be a "One Day Sale" on pure "Winter", as
it is being forecasted to turn into freezing rain by 6:00 p.m.
Anyone fortunate enough to be here today is going to have a day of
sweet memories to take away though and we hope to post a bunch 'o pic's
here later on for Apres Ski.

Conditions are Excellent. Pure Winter coverages with all the advantages of
the longer daylight hours that really help in the vision department.

It's not something that you even think about that much because your brain
just takes all the detail that better light sends it and factors that into
the performance of your sport, but we can tell you that you do Ski better
when the light is not flat or as greatly diminished at the end of the day
as it can be in January, early Feb. This makes a big difference leading up to
"Last Run".

Weather is mild -2C, but wind is very gusty and we suspect that it
could affect safety and lift operations. Overcast and heavy snow
until around 6:00 P.M. when freezing rain may enter the picture.

Please note: We've encountered some internet issues this week, so
some of what we would have liked to include has not been possible
due to up-load restrictions. It has been an exceptionally excellent week,
arguably the best conditions of the season. We will post additional
material in a review format as time permits. If you have a chance to get
to Tremblant you should go. No matter what the weather is doing, we
have such a great base that conditions/coverages will be very fine right
through to the end of the season.

Conditions Caveat: There may be icy glitches on exposed, wind blown areas,
but there are ways around this... Please see yesterday's Apres Ski for
"McCulloch Field Test" on this point.

Apres Ski for Thursday, March 10th, 2011

An exceptional day for those who possess the skills necessary to
navigate terrain that is covered in thick, fresh snow as well as the
knowledge or ability to locate the terrain that best suits their
preferences.

Unfortunately, it was also a day where there were many who did
not know where the snowy terrain was and consequently missed
all the excitement, while at the same time becoming rather "damp"
due to rain that reportedly started at just around noon on the South.

We say "reportedly", because we did not experience any rain what-so-ever
while we were skiing in fresh powder snow half way up to the knee with
occasional drift busting up to a bit below waist level on the North.

For all those that want to "gripe" or express some miserable sentiments about
having to ski in the rain, we're sorry we can't really sympathize because we
had a completely different perspective that was centered around this:

This is the second day in a row where we have heard about negative
reports of conditions, ice on McCulloch yesterday, and rain on the South
today, when those complaining had options for more pleasant skiing/boarding
that was literally a few meters away.

Yesterday we investigated McCulloch and found while there was some ice,
it was in the middle, high traffic zone while on the left side as you descended
there was a beautiful section of almost untracked fresh snow without so
much as a hint of ice running the length of the entire upper pitch.

We're not sure why anyone finding icy bits on the center of a run that's
fairly wide, would not try shifting their path back and forth across to see
if there were different surfaces on one side or another.

As far as today is concerned, anyone who rode to the Summit from the
soggy South, had to see all the snow that was right in front of them. Why
they would simply not go North instead of repeatedly facing rain on the South
descent and complaining about it, is beyond us.

We were so focused on the beauty of the North that we used up all the
available camera memory there, so this pic. immediately below is the
closest we have to the Summit. This location is parallel to the middle
of the Rope Tow North Park Jump Line, a few hundred feet below the
Summit.
