3/7/16 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Apres Ski, Mid-Eve. @ 7:42 P.M.

Thick, Dense, Pea Soup Fog.

The biggest functional Issue today was the vision, which was reduced to “Nil”
at times, and it certainly put an end to much photography as we could not keep
the lens dry. For similar reasons, Goggles with Yellow/Amber Lens inserts would
have been a huge asset as the Flat, Grey, almost Zero Contrast light, made Pic’s
and the general Summit views look like this:

The Ski/Board surfaces under all this Pea Soup Fog were fine. A bit of traffic
generated waviness, some soft, shallow, easy little moguls, no problem with
any of that... if you could have seen it all. As it was, without Contrast, depth
perception, even basic recognition of what was in front of you 3, 10, 20 Metres
away at ground level... made slow speed imperative for the sake of your shins.

The evidence of the Wind was all around and where its effects were
“Recorded” as on this Summit Ski Key Rack, you could plainly see it had been
at some very high speeds earlier.

The Skiing would have been much easier without the fog, no doubt, and the snow was
softening up some by Last Run, but where you had vision, say lower Beauchemin,
navigation was easy with lots of forward distance views to pick a line. No such
luck up with the fog, bumps frequently came unannounced as they where invisible
in the great field of no contrast White.

So, Below Lowell Thomas Triple, Expo Quad, Flying Mile Quad, TGV Quad, no problem,
great sight, easy Cruisin’!

The Snow never got saturated that we could see and there were even
some slick spots, not icy, just polished snow. Carving traction was fine,
speed was good, you just had to be very careful to go so slowly for safety
where the vision was fogged in.

Where you could safely see... it was lots of fun to go fast on. Lower
Fuddle-Duddle had extreme Carving lines all over it as the Good Skiers were
laying down Trench-Tracks at 45’, for just one example. The Upper portion
of Sissy Schuss, pictured here below, was a good example of todays
Cruising Quality.

There is lots of snow around, still some Glade lines left, and tonights Overnight low
at -5 C will maybe go down as far as -9 C on the Mountain, so there is predictably
going to be some icy, first thing in the morning.

With a projected high of +6 C, Sun, maybe rain sprinkles.... it will be all “Spring”
by 1:30 or so.

The forecast had alternated between Snowfall and/or with Sunshine...
We do not recall “Fog” icons ever being in the forecast mix, but the reality
certainly was what it was.

The “Comfort Zone”, the “User Friendly” was Mid-to-Base sectors by virtue
of the easy, long range vision and at least there was not even a drop of rain...
and Bonus.... the Chair Lift Seats were Totally Dry All Day!

Hope to see You on the Mountain tomorrow!

With Reference To Yesterday’s Skiing
and consequently applicable to today,
but with 10/14 more Cm’s New Snow:

Excerpt from our March 6th, Apres Ski...

"Clinically Speaking, the Skiing was Excellent, exactly the way we expected.

Realizing an Expectation is a very fulfilling, especially with Skiing because it’s
such a personal sense of connection with the sport. You’re not playing a “Team
Sport” when you Ski. It’s just you, your skis and the Mountain, so run after run
of well applied Skills over Completely Reliable, Totally Consistent, Purely Clean
Smooth, Fast, White Winter Snow becomes somewhat addictive if for no other
reason than Skiing is one of the most unique combinations of Fun, Personal Skills
Development and Accomplishment known to the Human Recreational Sports Experience.

Right Now... Tremblant is providing an almost ideal Skiing/Boarding environment,
arguably the finest, arguably the “Peak” Skiing experience in Eastern North America.

All you need to do is show up with you and your Skis."

Based on the pre-existing conditions and the Weather Notes as posted below,
we are prepared to stand on the above Excellent Expectations assessment being
appropriate for today as well.

It’s overcast providing shade, and even though there are low “+” temps at the Sud,
South Side Resort Base forecast, temps on Mountain Elevations should remain Sub-zero
for much of the day, so we expect conditions to remain largely “Winter” through Open
Hours... Much like this Yesterday Scene on Versant Nord, The North Side P’tit Bonheur...

“Winter” Hangs In There For One More Day!

Yesterday’s Last Run... On Nansen(Circa 1939)... You could see the active bands
of Snow-squall Weather approaching rapidly....

... and it’s been pretty much Snowing since then.. Overnight, it Snowed Really Solidly.
