Conditions 4/05/09

Post by T360 »

.

It is SNOWING quite heavily on the Mountain at this time!

The Officially open trail count is at 30 this morning, however
we expect that to change, possibly by the hour, if this heavy
snow fall continues.

The weather will be a Wild Card Today. It could stop snowing,
snow harder, change to rain or any other imaginable combination,
but what is important to keep in mind is that we are on the final
countdown to the season closing and with even a little new snow,
you need to get out and take advantage of our last remaining week.

The original forecast was for rain but it started to snow on the Upper
North Side at about 3:45 P.M. and it appears that it may have kept on
going all night.

At this stage any new snow is a welcome sight. The Mountain Crews will be surveying the conditions continuously and the Open Trail Count could change by the hour. This is a good thing because any more snow with sub-zero temps is an opportunity to expand terrain.

As usual, even though yesterday was "damp", if you had your
Descente Pancho on, you were warm and dry.

As usual, even though there were comments about the number
of runs open or the conditions, there was great skiing.

For example, the right side of many North Open sections has a
minimum 10 meter band of very high quality surface that has
always been in the shade, even on sunny days and that surface
was like satin yesterday... all day.

Another example was Alpine, which at 3:15 or so, was Great!

You will always find Good Skiing or Boarding somewhere, but you
need to patiently explore the open terrain to find it, then if necessary,
do a few repeats to work out the best lines.

There is no doubt that beginners will find it somewhat challenging,
Spring thawing often means thick going, but a good solid "Snow Plow”
can get you down Nansen any day, and to become a better Skier or
Boarder, it is important to practice in these conditions in order to improve.

Experts only need to focus on good technical execution to have fun in
any conditions.

Staying DRY is the key to enjoyment.

Today was going to be the Big wrap-up SKIER CROSS event
for the Telus SPIN, but the official SPIN Web site reports that
the event has been cancelled due to safety concerns
on the course.

We will report further on that in our live Twitter feed as
the day progresses.
