4/2/17 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Late Eve. Apres Ski Edit @ 11:00 P.M.

Warm Sun + Warm Air = Soft Snow, virtually everywhere...

Summit Snow was not nearly as deeply soft as the Base Levels.
The Summit actually had a trace of white snow still in the trees
by the Lowell Thomas Triple Chair at 4:00 P.M.. It basically took
most of the Open Hours for the softness to get all the way up to
La Crete, so there was more easy Speed in the Surfaces at higher
elevations.

One Way To Handle Those Icy Bits...

McCulloch has had some Icy Bit Centre Zones. Within the last
couple of days we reported that the Sides were better and this pic. Below,
is a perfect illustration of a McCulloch Descent path we frequently
use which is the Groomed Trail Edge under the TGV Quad as a ramp
to make Jump-Turns back and forth over it, as the snow always seems
to be soft there.

The Mogul Hounds were out on Expo in Full Force.

The Amazing Part Is... Expo, as soft as it was, had no significant
bare spots, and continues to have very complete coverage. There
are a few Bamboo Glitch Markers for the odd rocky outcropping,
however compared to the vast expanse of Wall-To-Wall White, those
glitches are quite small.

The BoardCross Course has been under construction for several days and
looking at it from above does not really show the depth of the cross-sections
of the Feature Contours. Looking back up from the runout, beside those contours,
their size becomes more evident.

92(*) Open Trails on all 4 Open Sectors at #Tremblant .

Generally, the Conditions continue to be a mix of Firm and Soft
that progresses towards the Softer Side as the day goes by and
the Thermal influences build. We want to emphasize that while
the Blues and Blacks have challenges, there is a Great Abundance
of Excellent Green’s which Always have a Daily Priority.

Even though there is no recorded Snowfall on the Official Data
for the past 2 days, there was definitely Snow in the air yesterday
and Snow on the Ground from the night before.

While it was not a big amount, the net effect where it fell or accumulated
was an enhancement to surfaces that in addition to slightly cooler temp’s,
made an overall improvement, particularly in the Glide factor.

As any experienced Skier will confirm, even a small refresher can make
big differences and considering the slickness and/or icy bits recently, we
think it’s definitely worth mentioning because in our opinion, it did make
a noticeable difference.

Think of it this way... If you had 2 slabs of Steel Plate @ 1 Square Metre
each, and you placed one slab on top of the other with nothing in between,
there will be a huge amount of surface friction if you try to move the top slab
around over the bottom one.

Next, add 4 small Ball Bearings the size of BB’s, symmetrically placed between
the 2 slabs and instantly the Top slab can be moved with light finger pressure,
no problem. The Surface Contact area of the Ball Bearings may be less than
.000001% of the slabs, but the effect is HUGE in friction reduction.

We think it’s a similar thing with the new, light snow. The surfaces before
it fell were a combination of firm and soft, but they were all Smooth and
all semi-warm, so the new snow bonded fairly well wherever it landed.

Below is a Case Study of how this affected a specific Trail which is one of
our regular Conditions Sample Points because it does not get early season
snowmaking support, so it relies on Natural Snowfall and as such is a great
indicator of overall Sector health.

Versant Nord, the North Side, #64, Marie-Claude Asselin(MCA). One of the prettiest
Ski Trails on Earth, and as a former Upper North Lift Line, now converted
to a Trail, it has a virtually perfect fall-line descent which has been routinely
Groomed this season to a little over the width of the Groomers Front blade,
say about 6 or 7 metres.

This Case Study is focused on the Bottom Half, accessed from the lateral
Cat-Track that runs between Lowell Thomas, over to Duncan at the top of
Devils River.

When many Trails were becoming quite mogul’d in the afternoon, we found
this Gem of a Trail, sitting there in magnificent condition, obviously without
more than a handful of tracks for the whole day, and arguably in perhaps
one of the top 10 days of its condition for the whole season.

Flat, Smooth, Wide, Fresh, New Snow... finding MCA in this shape
was an absolute joy and a reaffirmation of the concept that regardless of weather,
Sweet Spots of Excellence can always be found at Tremblant.

Even though a lot of the surrounding trails had grown quite mogul’d,
they all benefited from the Snow Dusting that we found to add a good
measure of glide back into conditions. In this specific case, MCA is a
Golden Example of a Hidden Gem, out of the common path, but a
Classic, Beautiful and Very Fine Trail that was easier than almost all the
surrounding Trails. For its Beauty and Technical Merit, MCA will always be
one of our Favourites.

At The End Of The Day...

It was Cool Enough To Support Last Run Versant Nord, North, “Snow In The Trees”,
one of the best indicators of surrounding stable surfaces.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
