Below:
We labeled this pic.file with “Wind Driven Snow” and we think
it’s pretty obvious why. The net effect is one we identify as
having the appearance of “Desert Sand Waves” and when this
occurs with the cool temps the wind delivered it with, it is
so dry that as small, very fine crystals, it is quite like dust.
Scroll down one more and we’ll show what that looks like.

Even with the dust-like fineness of the snow, the thickness is
variable as it has been shaped over ground contours by the wind
and what you see below could practically speaking be scaled up
to the size of the Mountain as well. Aerodynamics does not really
recognize scale(a Cessna 150 flies for the same reason as a 747),
so where it bends around small ground contours here, it also bends
around the Mountain, so there are zones at Tremblant that have retained
more than the stat total, as there are also zones that have less.

In our experience we found this snow “Fast”.

There isn’t much friction, and you can maintain glide quite easily
as well. Accelerating is very simple to do as a skier, with a quick
skating motion pushing up your velocity gets you an instant speed
response.

It is important to distinguish conditions separately as far as
“Surfaces” and “Atmospheric”.

Surfaces - very fine across all Skill Levels and categories.
There are some odd little hazards in the Un-Groomed,
and some new snow thickness in the groomed, but generally
we got about 90% of what we were forecasting.

Due to the Holiday attendance, there is some wear stress, but
that is primarily some polished slickness where traffic converges
into smaller restrictions. There were some developing mogul zones
by the end of the day, but the Night-Shift grooming should quickly
take care of that. There is some irregular fill-in and chop on trails like
our ongoing case study example Nord/North Le Tunnel, so there is
less forgiveness now and without a grooming refresh, this case will
return to it’s pure Experts only mogul status within a day or two.
It will be interesting to see if Mountain Crews can get back there.

All in all, a really really great day of high performance over
the vast majority.

Atmospheric’s - a bit windy, sometimes gusty and definitely still
with a cool wintery edge where facing the breezes.

We can adapt for the cool, and you can have fun all day until
you run out of Quad Muscles, if you want. Relaxed cruising
was an option, but as soon as you felt how good the performance
was, there was just no substitute for finding safe zones to dial up
the speed a bit as the fun is quite nearly addictive!

PLEASE NOTE: Heavy Snowfall Regional Weather Warning/Alert

Any cooler, and it would be cold.
Any warmer and it would be hot.
Any higher speed breezes would be windy.

Any different wouldn’t be quite so sweet, Snow White Winter.

From within the picture above, we expect to find
the performance picture below.

(Our apologies for the context of our very early 1:30 A.M.
Topic Introduction and forecasting that was based on the
up-to-the-minute available data, however something radically
different happened from between 1:30 A.M. and about 4:00 A.M.
as the temp. dropped like a stone to way below the projections so
the revised 8:00 A.M. temp is almost -10C cooler than initially forecast.)

Conditions Notes:

Intro.
We have written many times in this record that Grooming
machines can readily compact approximately 10cm’s of
fresh snowfall to near-ideal levels of trail surface density
on one pass.

Officially, we got 11cm’s.

The results this morning have the distinct potential to
generate “Best Of” conditions technical merit due to the
convergence of the pre-existing fullness of seasonal maturity,
plus, one completely fresh new layer very close to perfectly
added.

Beyond That:

We are splitting todays conditions notes into 2 categories,
the first being:

1) General, as a reference to this date as a point in time within
every winter season:

Our normal reference for “Best Of” usually includes “So Far”,
because as the season matures, the incremental accumulations
produce continuously, upwardly, escalating scope of quality and
coverage, however, statistically speaking, at least as far as “Winter”,
conditions(as separate and distinct from “Spring”), there has to be
a high point somewhere before those inevitable warming forces of
the changing seasons begin to diminish either the quality or the
coverage of the base.

Is that today? On February 17, probably not, but typically we might
theorize it is usually between now and within the next couple or three weeks.

If you gave Mother Nature a two week leeway on either side of
a seasonal pivot-point around right now, you can see why we
refer to February as the heart of authentic “Winter” at Tremblant, and...
why we recommend February as one of the best all-round options
for “All Things Considered” and "Timing Is No Object” Ski Holiday
advance bookings.

Of course...The “Probably Not” part from above is a particularly safe
bet when there is a Heavy Snowfall Weather Warning included above
in this post, but at the potential depths(15 +/- cm’s?) that storm system
may bring, it is likely to need more than one grooming cycle days to render
ideal compaction, so while that’s an overnight advantage for Sous Bois/Galdes,
for groomed, that may need time to be realized.

2) The second reference point is for specifically today’s individual
conditions as the fingerprint du jour.

Considering the Intro. above:

Across all Skill Level Rated Terrain as Green, Blue and Black,
and all categories of Groomed, and Un-Groomed Sous Bois,
Glades, Hors Piste, Moguls etc., etc., et al...

Average Is Excellent.
