Happy New Year To All!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Apres Ski Up-date @ 5:50

Preview report for tomorrow shows preserve and protect mode
with open trail reduction to 43.

Temps return to well below freezing, so caution will be appropriate
on all areas while Mountain Crews work to build and restore
surfaces. Trails will reopen when deemed safe by Ski Patrol.

On the bright side, all 4 sides of the Mountain are still scheduled
to be open.

Please note: Current Park Up-dates.

Best Wishes to everyone for a safe, enjoyable
and successful year for all your endeavors.

For some reason, it seems like yesterday that we were all
worried about "Y2K", the millennium bug, and every computer
on the planet crashing...

Where did that decade go??? ahhh, well.....

Back to Reality...

78(*) Open Trails with an important note:

There is only 1 progressive opening on the whole list,
on the Official Tremblant.ca Snow Report, published at 5:32 A.M.

That single progressive is the Soleil access to upper Ryan's.
It's not a significant factor, so if you want to ski/board
upper Ryan, simply enter from the the usual left side
off of Taschereau, just below the summit.

On a different note, how ironic that today's single
progressive opening could connect us to the entire
history of Mont Tremblant as shown in this pic. below.
Somehow, this is a very appropriate time on New Years day
to look back at this, at least for the dedicated Tremblant fan
that cares about the history.

This file pic. was taken back on Dec. 13th, 2010
and while the warmth in the air has melted most
of the snow out of the trees, we chose it because
in a way, it covers the entire History of Mont Tremblant
as an Alpine ski area.

Here's why...

In Feb of 1938, sitting, having breakfast in the restaurant
at Grey Rocks which can be seen in it's ghostly way in this picture,
Joe Ryan overheard Lowell Thomas, whom he had never
met before in his life, talking about hiking to the summit
of Tremblant, right to the point where this picture was taken from.

How's that for starters...

Lowell Thomas was a famous American Radio Broadcaster (when
radio was huge, and there was no such thing as T.V.), who
frequently visited Quebec for wilderness adventure and this
trip to Tremblant was for that exact purpose.
He chronicled the story very well for years afterward, so we actually
have quite good records of how it all happened.

In one of his famous radio broadcasts, Lowell Thomas goes on
to explain how Joe Ryan confidently walked over to his table and asked
if he could be included. Several hours later after a 2 hour struggle to
summit in waist deep powder snow, they paused to have a meal and
admire the view.

"We found ourselves in a glistening fairyland of ice crystals and pine
trees, either coated with rime ice or buried deep in snow."

"We got a thrill out of it and especially young Joe Ryan. said he,
"This surely is one of the most glorious spots in the world and there's
only one thing wrong with it. It's too difficult getting up here."
He then added...
I believe I'll fix that." "

Quotations from Lowell Thomas on reaching the summit
of Tremblant with Joe Ryan for the first time. Feb, 1938.

The rest is all the history that this picture you see above includes.
We think it's a fascinating story and that there's no better day
than New Year's to reflect on the absolute privilege that we enjoy
to this day that came from that chance meeting on the other
side, and those words first spoken from this point of this picture,
72 years ago.

Today's dominant weather feature is an unseasonably high
temp of about +6C forecasted for the base level.

Fortunately, it shouldn't be too bad on 2 accounts...
Firstly, it should be short, like 1 day, and secondly,
our Summit is typically 4 to 5 degrees C colder,
so hopefully, there won't be any damage up there.

It may be a good opportunity for Mountain Crews to pack some
areas when they're soft, but only time will tell how and what
they can get done.

Spring Conditions For A Day!

Get out and enjoy them!

There was a good crowd out to see all the action.
Even if it may have been a bit damp from time to time,
the warm temps were easy to handle.
