Mid-Morning Up-Date:

Vanier closed, but Upper Expo and Duncan are still shown
as progressive. We think that they are actually opened now
because there are people on Expo from both the top and
side door from Duncan as you can see in this web cam snap shot.

Please also note the pristine Winch Groomed track right down
the center of Expo. If you've got good edges, Expo will be a blast
today!

Things seem quiet in the Village after the big Holiday
crowd heads back home. Getting ready for "First Tracks"
yesterday morning. Our thanks to Steph Ferry for today's

With 49(*) Open Trails on the list this morning, we thought
that there might be more, but evidently, Mountain Crews are
still very much involved in a careful restoration process.

There are 6 "progressive" or gradual openings this morning.
The most interesting of those are Bon Vivant, from the top of
the Edge sector over to Nansen as well as Action, Escapade
and Letendre, so while the Edge Quad chair is shown as open
on the Official Snow Report, we suspect it may be delayed
until the Ski Patrol clears the runs on the Edge for opening
as the day progresses.

The other Progressive openings are Upper Expo and Taschereau.
Watch for those to open up later on.

The weather this morning is mostly overcast at the summit,
however, the sun should poke through later on. Temps early
at -9C and may drop a degree or so during the day as we head
for cooler overnight numbers under mostly clear skies.
The winds should be light and from the South-West, or crossing
over the summit from the Soleil sector toward Nansen.

There is extensive Snow Making going on and with almost ideal
weather for it, particularly the light winds, we expect that to
continue for a while as runs get built up again. At this stage, it
would be nice if Mother Nature would give us a Blizzard, or even
just a good old fashioned Snow Storm, but until then, we will have
to rely on the efforts of our Crews to carry on with the tools they have.

Things could be a lot worse and we have to be thankful for what we
have, particularly the stable long term sub-zero forecast that will
allow snow making production to carry on at a good clip.

In the mean-time, surface quality continues to be a major focus
of the maintenance effort. There was quite a bit of reference in the
Official Tremblant.ca Preview Snow Report yesterday on the use of
"Powder Makers" in the grooming process. That tells us they're working
on the loosening up the top layers.


This is the kind of pic that any experienced
skier or boarder will be able to look at and tell
exactly what to expect when their edges hit
the ground... Headed for McCulloch.

Freshly tuned edges on your skis or board will be a critical
element in your ability to carve and maintain grip on very
firm surfaces. Don't forget this basic utility function.

Get out to Tremblant's slopes for all the
health benefits of vigorous outdoor exercise!

Explore the Mountain carefully, choose terrain suitable
for your skill level and have fun!

Apres Ski @ T360...

Unfortunately the common theme in the feedback for today is icy.

This is a vitally important connection to the need for tuned equipment
for optimum performance.

If you don't have good edges in these conditions, you will have a difficult
time maintaining control and you will be doing a lot of skidding.

There will be functional differences between Skier Feedback
and Board feedback.

We think that Skiers are going to have a bit of an advantage in these
conditions due to virtually double the working length of metal edge
on the ground.

If there's anyone that would like to have a constructive debate on that,
we welcome intelligently expressed viewpoints. We know there's a lot of
preferential opinions on both sides.

Theoretical Concept:
The ultimate Tremblant icy conditions ride is a
short radius, medium flex, slalom ski with fresh, sharp edges.
A full out, race room ski will have too much inflexible camber, so
it will not be compliant enough at slow speed to maintain ideal
surface contact.

The detuned, reduced flex of readily available recreational slalom
radius skis, is in our opinion, as close as ideal as we can get to.
In almost 40 seasons of actual Tremblant slope testing, we have
not found any other Alpine Descent device that can match the holding
capability of the recreational short radius slalom ski.

The bottom line with this point is that with the sharp edges of
a pair of short radius slalom skis you can skate.

Being able to skate in direct association with anything "icy"
has obvious advantages.
