Morning Update: From the Official Tremblant.ca Snow Report

Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Taschereau Cup, Tremblant
has welcomed the best up-and-coming skiers in Eastern Canada in
the 13 and 14-year-old age group, since its beginnings. This weekend,
more than 150 young men and women from Québec, the Maritimes,
Ontario and the United States are expected to take part in the well-known
race. The slalom will be held on Saturday, January 15th, and a giant slalom
will be held on Sunday the 16th.

See below for history link to the Taschereau Cup(**)

Love them Big Bumps!

Not necessarily because we like to ski 'em either,
but because they represent rapid, efficient and
extremely effective coverage.

The "Bump Park"

We Love the way Expo is developed by the strategic placement
of the SnowMakers so that they are stationary long enough to create these
large bumps. This is an extremely effective, efficient way to cover
the inherently uneven surface of Expo.

Many moons ago, even in a good snow year, it could take to the middle
or end of January to get enough natural coverage to Ski Expo without
severe hazard exposure.

Now, they just bury all the jagged rock, cracks, stumps and anything
else you can think of under this series of big bumps, let it settle for a
few hours, then winch groom Expo from Top to Bottom, to an almost
perfect, smooth, super quality surface that is just about as flat as a
Billiard Table.

This strategy is brilliant. We estimate that it substantially reduces
time, labour, and other resources, so as well as the exceptional surface
quality, we think it probably saves a lot of money too.

There are those that have been vocally negative towards these bumps,
but we think the advantages in very practical resource management,
far, far out-weigh the usually brief time between when the guns shut off
and the Groomers blades drop to flatten it out.

As a case study, they can rebuild Expo here in about 96 hours, if all
goes well. If you had to wait for Mother Nature to provide this coverage,
it might not happen in a whole season.

There are many that enjoy skiing those bumps, if they are allowed.
We have heard people raving about how much fun they are as a terrain
feature. We're going to call it a "Bump Park".

This strategy is widely used at Tremblant as all the regulars know, so
before anyone questions it, we would encourage them to at least
understand the functional merits of this technique that is simple
and effective.

After they've made all the Big Bumps, it's time to flatten it all out
with the Heavy Duty gear.

Todays Weather...

Partially sunny, with highs reaching -13C, so
it's a wee bit crisp out there, but if you can catch some rays
there will be thermal energy in them for sure. Light Westerly winds
moving across the summit from McCulloch toward Lowell Thomas.
Riding up the TGV should be easy with the breeze at your back
and coming up Lowell Thomas, you won't feel too much, if anything
until the very top.

All in all, a wonderful winter day with a lot of photo opps.!

We are very pleased to see that upper Bansai has been Opened
on the North Side. This is a good indication that the accumulation
of Natural Snow is coming along to the point where things can
be reopened. With any luck, we might even see a few more like this
for the weekend.

All things considered, great conditions and gradually
expanding terrain make Tremblant your best bet for
weekend fresh air, exercise, friends and fun!
