3/27/11 Conditions

Post by T360 »

Apres Ski Up-Date and draft of tomorrow's info:

Conditions were fabulous if you have fresh, sharp edges,
if you know where to go to avoid icy sectors, and/or if
you include brilliant sunshine and fabulous views as part what
makes any day at Tremblant special.
Otherwise, you would have found it icy. If you have not had a tune-up
recently, you may have found it very icy. If you are a beginner or
if you are from Revelstoke, British Columbia, you may find it icy.
If you have spent any time in the Parks on metal modules such
as rails, boxes, stairs etc. that dull edges, you will find it icy.

Think about it... just for example...
if you spent a few hours grinding your ski or board
edges over the metal park features, what kind of sharpness
will you have left for icy??? ...none.

Metal on metal= dull.

We were criticized yesterday for not being accurate enough about
icy sectors, so we want to make it clear that there is indeed ice
out there, but we also want to make it clear that individual experience
will vary due to Skills and the sharpness of your edges.

We also want to make it clear that just because there's ice out there,
it doesn't mean you can't have a good day. Ask the Mountain Staff
where the best conditions are for your skills and go there. The Tremblant
Crews always have good surfaces somewhere. Growing up decades ago
when todays sophisticated grooming equipment did not exist, we had to
adapt to Mountain conditions icy, or not. "Challenges that don't kill you
make you stronger." Skiing/Boarding are complex physical activities
requiring coping skills for all kinds of conditions and if you want to
become anything beyond a beginner, you have to be ready to handle them.

Our contributing member that brought this up was entirely within his
rights to do so, and was correct within the frame of his experience, as
we think we were too. So then, why the differences?

There are many legitimate reasons, but obviously sharp edges is one,
and after thinking about it, knowing where to go and being content to
spend the day in those areas is another, but the latter means that
you need adjust your expectations to suit conditions. If you want to ski
or board ice free, then you will have to search out those areas and stay
there. Typically, that's what we do, so we automatically adjust our
expectations to accept the ice-free places we find as what we'll be skiing
today. We don't even think about it so much anymore after all these years,
we just find the best surfaces and stay there.

We also do not expect to go as fast as we do when we have close to flawless
winter conditions. In our opinion, 90% of the problems people have are because
of too much speed for the conditions. If you know there's ice around, you have
no business winging down the Mountain at high velocity beyond stopping, braking,
steering or edge control.

It's the end of March. We do not expect things to be as good as or even the
same as stable mid-winter is, and until Mother Nature warms things up for good,
realistically, we are going to find the imperfections that happen at every
Ski area in the world that gets a transition to Spring.

The people that have the most fun are the ones that can adapt the most
and the quickest, so within that reference, we try to stay positive.

We've been talking about the durability of the Tremblant coverage
and excellent conditions for weeks and this weekend is no exception.
Conditions here at Tremblant are literally getting better by the day
and frequently by the hour as both Mother Nature and Mountain Crews
are providing Skiers and Boarders with Spring Conditions Par Excellence!

After -15C overnights, there can be icy or slick areas, but these are all
normal for this time of year when the daytime high temps and the suns
thermal energy soften things up during the day. Be careful as you cruise
around initially and keep in mind that things can and do change throughout
the day.

Conditions Caveat:

As fine as things are for the vast majority of groomed areas,
that does not mean there are no glitches. Dealing with Mother
Nature means that not everything can be perfect, only close.
You need to use common sense with regard to speed and
braking/steering control, particularly in areas that get daily sun
exposure, traffic and wear patterns, as well as on steeper pitches
or around trail intersections and run-out zones, for some examples.

There are variable icy sections created by daily Spring temperature
cycles that require carefully speed controlled navigation. Watch out
for both surface and traffic conditions that may be encountered without
a lot of notice.

We recommend that you have your equipment properly tuned with
fresh, sharp edges.

The Tremblant Quality Story.

Every day, after the lifts stop turning, after we've gone home,
these dedicated pro's start grooming and often put in long shifts.
Equipped with this powerful Tiller attachment, this groomer can
cover about 4 acres an hour. Teams of multiple groomers do
the trick and then we get the benefit starting at "First Tracks"
first thing, next morning.
