2/1/12 Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

Brief T360 Late Night Apres Ski, below in "Reply"

---------- 7:17 A.M. Orig. Post -----------------

89(*) Open Trails on 3 Operational Sides of Tremblant,
Edge Sector, except for lower run out portion, #92, Le Tendre
to Beauchemin, is off-line today.

There is still a fair amount of Snowmaking on the list, however,
many will appreciate that this is shown as "Night-Time", so we
shouldn't be running into it during the day today. That may be
related to the expected day time high temp of zero, which if it
happens, may only be briefly, and on the South Side base level.

Tremblant(360) Geographic 101....

(Caution: We could be wrong on the precise nature of the potential
weather outcomes for tomorrow. You can then say "I Told You So",
however, if we're right, we'll post the "Fresh Tracks" photos and
say the same.)

"If" and "When" are two very "Dependant" terms in Weather Model
Forecasting and for those with an interest in Geophysical phenomenon,
here's where the story becomes divergent.

The "Zero" potential day time high is listed as such on the Official
Tremblant Snow Report, but "The Weather Network" thinks that the
high temp for today will be -5 C.

At 7:30 A.M., we're already at -4 C, when the forecasters thought
we'd be at -7 C, so already we have quite a bit of contradictory info.

Let's take a look at "The Weather Network" 12 hour chart for today
because it has a very revealing "Fine Print" acknowledgement that
in a way, we talk about all the time....

We "Like" the "Fine Print" on this because it says "Squalls", defined
as localized pockets or zones of extreme precipitation activity. These
"Squalls", "If" they occur, do so for a variety of reasons and in a variety
of places, but at Tremblant, on a day like today, with temps near freezing,
and a moisture bearing Southerly Wind, the most likely scenario is potential
"Orographic" Snowfall in pockets or zones of extreme precipitation activity
on the North Side Of Tremblant where the warm moist air is forced up
the Mountain into colder, high elevation air masses, and where the moisture
condenses and falls as SNOW!

Understanding this frequently occurring phenomenon is what often leads
us to say...

Toss 'yer Gear in the vehicle and
Head for Tremblant A.S.A.P. !!!
Potential SNOW ALERT!!!!

The results of "Orographic" "Squall" activity
are often disproportionally HUGE, Blowing,
Drifting, and Accumulating SNOW!!!

Tremblant(360) History 101...

The interesting thing to us as Tremblant History Fans is....

Joe Ryan, Tremblant's founder, Knew This In 1938, and/but he
watched it happen for 10 years before he could gather the resources
to build the road to, and cut the Trails on, Versant Nord, The North Side,
where he absolutely knew there was More Abundant and Better Retained
SNOW!

Here's our "One Picture's Worth A Thousand Words"
Forecast for Tomorrow....

Caveat: We Could Be Wrong, But If We're Right...
Tomorrow could be an exceptional Tremblant day!

Excusez-moi ... Every Day at Tremblant is exceptional,
say, compared to sitting in an office somewhere, so even
if we're wrong about the degree or characteristics of
"tomorrow", it will still be a beautiful day at Tremblant
on everything that's Open!

Science, Art, Risk And Probability...

Weather Forecasting is as much an "Art" as it is a "Science"
where people "Risk" a prediction based on "Probability".

The Human experience loves to talk about the weather,
but no matter what "weather" happens, any day on the
Open slopes of Tremblant is a great day!

With as much snow as we have now, correct, incorrect, sunny,
cloudy, you just can't go wrong at Tremblant anyway!

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If You  "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)

T360 Prime Time Evening Apres Ski... @10:58 P.M.

We Dodged A Weather Bullet...

It got up to -1C for about 4 Hours and there was mixed
precipitation, unfortunately, not as much as we were hoping
for in the way of snow, so far.

The morning will add to the story, but it will not be complete
until we get on the Mountain to inspect all the nooks and crannies
to see what's what, so sorry about that, but it's not going to be
for about 20 hours from now (@ 9:40 P.M.), before we can deliver
a "Big Picture" Proof of Conditions report.

We'll get the basic morning stat's up with whatever's available, but we're
going to keep it abbreviated so we can cover more ground.

Today's Bottom Line
Conditions Summary:

As we said before, the snow hasn't gone anywhere, but today's ambient
humidity with the small amount of snow we've gotten has resulted in a
rather "settled" effect that has, for lack of better descriptives, increased
the density of the natural snowpack as you can see in this North Side
snowdrift, just below the summit.

The quality of the groomed Alpine Surfaces continues at the highest levels
possible and any increase in the apparent heaviness of the snow is for all
intents and purposes giving it a better packed feel.

The Edge sector is back on-line tomorrow and out of 95 trails, 94 are Open.
The one closure on the Official Preview List is Mi-Chemin, between Nansen
and the Base loading zone of the TGV Quad Chair.

If you live regionally, it'll be a great weekend here, so get out early if you can,
then have an early lunch and stay for "last run" to get the most vertical with
the least traffic.
