2/19/13 Tremblant Conditions

94(*) Open Trails at Tremblant with Soleil Sector on "Progressive"
or Gradual Opening.

Below: Speaking of "Soleil"... Yesterday was one of those days where the intensity
of the deep blue sky was only exceeded in beauty by the magnificent surface
conditions that were very high performance carve-able. Controlling speed with
skidded or "Parallel" turns was super easy too as this Tremblant Instructor
demonstrates here on Upper McCulloch.

Bottom line, grip for any style... no problem.

Our apologies for late report this A.M. due to
out of office chores piling up... probably adding
to this as the day progresses.

Way, Way Milder Temp's today will seem "Hot" compared to
what we've gotten used to over the past few weeks. On and Off,
but mostly "On" the cool winter weather has been a blessing to the stability
of Tremblant's surfaces, and we like our snow well chilled too, but...
every once in a while it's nice to have a thermal break and today is just
such a day.

Today's weather, for the record, sees temps climbing up to just around
the freezing mark, South Base level, but our prediction is that there will
be very little to no effects(**) on the surface quality because of the quite light
wind, currently East, and the overcast which will keep solar energy off the snow.

Another case of where the ambient cold storage of Tremblant's huge mass,
generated by weeks/months of very cold nights will help maintain very fine
surfaces for the near future.

The wind may pick up, and when it does it will change direction(S-E) and...
if forecaster's are right, bring more fresh snow! Existing weather models
suggest up to 10 CM's or about 4 inches of Fresh and with a brisk S-East
breeze, we could see some very fine drifting accumulations on all 4 sides
of Tremblant. The Sou-East orientation carries snow from the Superieur
Geant sector all the way across the Summit towards Nansen, but we feel the
real surprise could come with very significant benefit to the Edge Sector.

Tremblant has already enjoyed a fair amount of fresh snow this past week.
We ran this pic. from North Side "Last Run" in last night's Apres Ski and we're
adding it in here again because it sums up a lot about surface quality that
features the "Main Ingredient's" of this snap shot... fresh, cold formed, dry snow.

Below:
Anyone who's been at Tremblant during the past week knows it's been "Breezy".
To say the least.... some days, downright forceful.
This shot taken off the Expo Quad Summit looking back over the
top crest of the Expo run itself, clearly shows the layer of wind
carrying snow over the crest and down onto the run. This surface
wind and the snow being moved by it was building not only some
fine drifting accents, but was "refreshing" surfaces on a continuous
basis all day.

"Ground Speed", "Air Speed" are two terms aircraft pilots are familiar with
and recent days at Tremblant have been times these terms could be directly applied
to the Alpine Winter Snow Sport experience. Riding up TGV, with the wind
at your back "Air Speed" was just about zero. Riding up Duncan and cresting
the summit, "Air Speed" felt like... riding on the hood of a car on the Autoroute!

"Ground Speed" of course, was exactly what it always is on a High Speed
Detachable Quad Chairlift.

This is a good time to acknowledge the recent consistency of the Duncan Quad.
We hope we're not speaking too soon, but other than the usual people issues
with loading and off-loading, mostly with beginners, the Duncan Quad has been
performing very well over the recent past and the issues it had, seem to be dialled
in fairly well, so Congratulations to Mountain Crews.

(**)Above, we talk about how we feel there will be little to no effects
on Tremblant's fine surfaces even with temps at or close to the Freezing mark.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
