------------- 8:29 A.M. Orig. Post ----------------
94/95(*) Open Trails at Tremblant as our favourite Mountain
hangs on by the "Finger Nails", to "Winter".
Excellent, Abundant Fresh Snow Skiing and Boarding
For All Posted Skill Level Terrain....
...with appropriate care as noted below...
When something hangs on by the "Finger Nails", it
means more or less, by the edge, on the edge of,
just barely, very close to loosing grip, or any other
way of suggesting that something is being held onto
by the narrowest margin.
That is certainly the case as temps yesterday did break the Zero
or freezing mark on the South Base level briefly, for a little
over an hour between 3:30 and 4:30 P.M..
-Fortunately, it was overcast.... so no added solar energy.
-Fortunately, the primarily North breezes were quite light...
so not much "Blow Dryer" effect, especially on the South.
-Fortunately, the extent of the warmth did not go much above
the top of Johannsen on the South... so the vast majority of
South terrain below the Summit was unaffected.
-Fortunately, there's typical spread in the temps between
South and North where the North and Edge are usually 2 to 3 degrees C
Cooler.... so, and this might be the sweetest "Fortunately" of all...
Today.... This Morning...
"Proof Of Sub-Zero North, Top-to-Bottom"
Please Note: we zoomed in on this Web Cam Snap Shot to
highlight the featured snow in the trees detail. As grainy
or pixelated as it may seem, it's one of the sweetest pic's
we love to see before heading off to the Mountain.
"Spring" will come soon enough... but for "Winter"...
Thank Goodness For "North"!
Both Tremblant's More Northerly Latitude and...
Tremblant's Versant Nord, The North Side.
Of course, the Skiing and Boarding hold every promise
of being completely superb on every Open Trail, South,
Soleil, North and Edge.
The Stat's Say 29CM's of Fresh, but we all know that Naturally falling
Snow with any wind at all does not accumulate evenly across the Mountain.
Some Areas get wind cleared, partially, completely, some areas get
drifted, partially, completely...
We "Like" the latter!
... and when it does get drifted, whole sections look like this...
It's up to you to go and find 'em!
Glitches? Very few indeed. "Perfect" is only a concept when it
comes to working with Mother Nature at any Ski Resort we've
ever been to, so there may be the odd natural hazard, there may
be the odd wind exposed or high traffic concentrated slick zone,
and naturally, if there's been any above freezing temps, followed by
overnight sub-zero's, there can be icy spots.
....but, compared to the overall surface condition with as much natural
snow as has fallen at Tremblant over the past week, and the very brief
temp blip, they will be quite insignificant.
The Importance Of Appropriate Skill Level Trail Selection:
In the time period following abundant natural snowfall, matching
Trail selection with your realistic skill level becomes more critical.
For Example...
There are many beautifully groomed "Expert" surfaces at Tremblant
that we would take confident, eager to learn Intermediates on when
those surfaces have been stable through repeated daily grooming
cycles. That might not be the case today. It can take Mountain Crews
a couple of days to catch up with the total designated groomed terrain
and until that happens, things can be more challenging, so we recommend
careful attention to Posted Skill Level Signage at this stage.
An example of a superseding Trail Skill Level posting is Algonquin.
Groomed, Algonquin is a nirvana-like cruising heaven, rated with a
Green "Easy" or beginner rating. Ungroomed, as it is currently listed,
it typically has a Ski Patrol Hand Posted "For Experts Only" and/or
"Natural Hazards", Black Diamond level difficulty rating signs. Alternately,
there may be signs posted at the Summit entrance to the Soleil Sector that
state the entire area is rated for Blue's or Black's.
Believe them... Ungroomed, Algonquin can be a thigh burning, energy draining
marathon of endurance and we've spoken to more than one explorer in the last
few days that have remarked on how difficult is actually is. Lured by the gentle,
inviting Summit entrance that looks easy enough, the un-groomed conditions
beyond that initial vantage point are exactly as posted, Black Diamond Challenge.
