3/20/13 Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Late Night Apres Ski Edit... Under construct at 11:59 P.M.

There were Snow Squalls of heavy concentration. From time
to time, Tremblant's peak was shrouded in Snow Cloud.

On a rotating basis, it was snowing
heavily somewhere on Tremblant all day long.

We called an "Orographic Precipitation Event" on the North and
here is the best illustration we can match that with...

The snow on the South was faster than the snow on the North. That is not
a criticism though, just an observation. The snow was thicker on the North
and compared to yesterday which we found relatively high friction, it was
quite quick, just not quite as quick as the South.

The speed difference was strictly in terms of Glide capability. In all
forms of control inputs, such as Steering, Braking and Edging...
you had similar responsiveness on all the Open Terrain at Tremblant.

Generally Speaking....
"North" Is always better than "South" when it comes to "Winter" as well
as regional latitudes and the likely-hood of more snow.
Even if the weather is sometimes Brisk during the delivery phase, we're
very happy to be seeing as much snow as Mother Nature chooses to leave
here and we'll just have to find ways to cope with it until seasons end.

Days like these remind you just how much fun it was as a kid to be outside
in snowy winter weather for any activity if you were lucky enough to grow
up in a Northern climate.

No matter where you were at Tremblant today, there was
so much beauty in Mother Nature's display's....

If you can make it for tomorrow, it will be a better version of today.

Mountain Crews are working on it right now...

Beginners and Intermediates will have miles of Groomed Terrain too,
however earlier in the day will be better than later in the day due to
traffic related surface depths. When there's this much snow, it's
coming so fast and thick that things can get tracked up as the day goes on.

In Our Opinion...

A Significant Orographic Snow Precipitation Event Has Occurred On
The Nord, North Side Of Tremblant.

This is in addition to all the fresh snow that has fallen on
all sides and sectors of Tremblant.

There was enough wind velocity yesterday to warrant the closure
of much of the South Side, including the Gondola and Flying Mile
lifts, so while you could Ski/board out to the South Base, you could
not get back up. If you wanted to use the South, returning to the
Summit, you had the TGV and all the Open Terrain it services.

That same wind velocity and direction, Nor-Easterly... was
creating very irregular drifting patterns of deep snow deposits
on the ground specifically, as for the most part, it was just way
too strong for much of the snow to be retained in the trees the
way it might be with a lower wind speed.

So, the shape of the Mountains contours and the way that the wind
was moving the snow are the main factors in what Experts are going to
be thinking they've gone to Heaven for this morning....

Deep, Drifted Snow Features....

Except right at the wind-blown exposed
Summit's Peak... where....

There is no photography we have that could capture the sense of
wind speed encountered standing at this one point.

The primary wind direction was Nor-East, so in this pic above, it is
moving from right to left, basically, coming up Beauchemin and
blasting over the peak at an Almighty speed carrying tons of snow
somewhere... somewhere on the South Side, farther down that
we hope to find today.

In the mean-time, almost defying the odds, a few metres down the
Mountain, and around a couple of corners... the left, lee-side wind
sheltered top portion of P'tit Bonheur had very sweet fresh powder lines
of joyfully smooth, consistent depth.

(The two pic's above were taken within 4 minutes.)

The wind in this spot pictured above was too much to allow deep
drifting but low enough to permit a very fine fill-in on the sides, as well
as completely refreshing the wide open portion of the trail from side to side
and top to bottom with a perfectly flat, spotless, seamless, wall to wall
magic carpet of pure winter white satin smooth snow.

Almost unbelievable how there could be that much difference in the
conditions between two zones so close together, but that was typical
of yesterdays amazing weather.

Beginners and Intermediates are not going to find un-groomed terrain
easy. The thickness of the overall depth, tracked and cut up by Skiers
and Boarders makes a very irregular surface that has greatly different
forward resistance characteristics.

There were two sources of friction...

1) the tracked surface depth differences created by traffic,
i.e., rutt's

2) the new snow itself was quite dry and light, but there was
something about the crystalline formation that made for more
drag/friction than we would have expected.

Plateau's took more work to keep speed on...

Steeper pitches were easier to navigate because of this
extra friction that acted like a natural speed control.

It was all good, just different than we thought it would be.

Regulating Body Comfort was a bit of a constant adjustment thing
because you had to bundle up for the wicked wind at the Summit,
on some lifts and trails, while in sheltered zones with an ambient
air temp of just below freezing... working fairly vigorously cranking
off turns in thick snow got you hot real quick, so zippered vents
ruled the day there. There was no one setting that would do for
everything you encountered.

Todays Conditions Feature:

Abundant, Deep, Fresh Snow.

This shot Below, was snapped riding up the Duncan Quad,
immediately to the right of the Devil's River entrance over the
right side(Looking up) of Saute Moutons lower. This sector goes
straight down to join up with Duncan where Duncan runs under it's
own chair. The tall trees on the right side of this pic were creating
a protected, lee-side snow drifting feature.

Todays Conditions... Will offer a variety for all skill levels, however
this much snow in this short a time, it certainly favours those with
Expert Skills on the Un-groomed or tracked up terrain.

A focus on speed control with a low, narrow stance, well centred over
skis will be the easiest way to navigate, and it may be necessary to use
old fashioned skidded or side-slipped parallel turns to carefully get through
some areas of heavy build up or highly tracked surfaces.

If you are new to the area or not quite sure how to match your
skills to trail selection... ask the Info. Crews with their Yellow "?"
on the backs. They know what you need to know.

Todays Weather... Starts at -4 C, rising to -1 C, with light,
additional snowfall. Fortunately... a very light Sou-West Wind
shifting to West, so starting from Soleil and swinging around
slightly to be coming up the Mountain on McCulloch... all headed
roughly towards Lowell Thomas. It should stay low velocity, so
all in all, a very easy mild winter day.

It's A Fine Winter Work-Out On Ton's Of Fresh Snow!

It's also the best assurance that when you can get here... if that
can't be today... that both the base and the outright square area of
coverage are exceptional for this point in the Season.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
