T360 Middle of the Night Shift Apres Ski @ 2:20 A.M. …

Snowing, Snowing, Snowing….

It was a very busy day on the Mountain today, however, even though
the attendance numbers where at some of the highest levels of the
season, it was not only possible to beat the lines, but by using the singles
line, we kept moving at a brisk pace and rarely waited for more than 4 or
5 minutes and mostly 3 or 4 or less.

No doubt, if you stuck with the Mainstream line at the Gondola, there was
up to a 15 min. wait, but it needs to be pointed out that was not the case all
day, only the very peak times just before and just after Lunch. When we
walked by, it was 10-12 min’s, maybe, but we proceeded over to
Flying Mile and the singles line there was 3 minutes.

As Experienced Tremblant Fans know, virtually all Chair Lifts here have
2 sided access, and typically, one side will have a shorter line. By observing
while approaching, it’s possible to determine the short side and “Presto” …
you are on your way directly.

Conditions today continued to be dominated by Fresh Snowfall.

No Problem!

Overnight Grooming last night had everything in very fine shape and
even with the Saturday weekend traffic volume there was excellent
durability in Surface quality right up to Last Run.

One reason our Apres Ski is so late is Picture Processing takes so long
trying to render out detail with the overwhelming density filter of Mother
Natures Nickel Sized Snowflakes coming down at a rapid rate.

Above: As close as the Flying Mile Quad comes to the South Park XL Kickers,
this much Snow in the air often requires manual camera settings
that are quite difficult to pull off in a bouncy chair lift, so we were
very happy to get this “Drive By Snap Shot”!

Below: Over on the Upper North Park, snow did not slow down the
enthusiastic jumpers there, but almost as soon as they left the ground,
they were out of sight in the White Winter background.

It’s going to be a nice cool overnight at -16 C, so the Summit may get
as cool as -20 C at it’s higher elevation, so we expect that with Grooming,
tomorrow mornings “First Tracks” should be exceptional!

On top of that… it’s supposed to be Sunny too!

(**)“It Snowed A Bunch” is a very un-scientific reference to any accumulation,
but intentionally made today because regardless of the total statistical amount,
with the Wind and Drifting Factors, we can tell you for a fact, there were
Nord, North Side Drifting Features that were over 60 CM’s deep.

Twice yesterday we had Waist-Shots of Powder Drift-Busting, and
Numerous times(forget how many), but a few dozen or more, Knee-Shots
of Powder Drift-Busting.

If you are Pre-Occupied with nothing but the record, Tremblant.ca’s
Official Snow Report states 10 CM’s of New Snow in the 24 Hour period,
but... with all due respect, we say there’s a Whole Bunch More Than That, and
quite a bit of the Extra has Drifted in on Versant Nord, The North Side.

Entire Sectors of the Nord, North, got significant Drifting Above and Beyond
The Stat Totals.

Above: This scene from the lower portions of Nord, North Side Trails Banzai
and Marie-Claude Asselin clearly shows accumulation occurring at a higher
rate than the stat’s indicate. Also… This pic. is Yesterday @ Noon Hour, and
does not show what would have fallen here for the rest of the day.

Besides the Obvious Beauty of Mother Natures Snowy Scenery, this is
one of our favourite places on the Mountain because the Wind/Drifting
Factors frequently benefit this Zone with HUGE amounts of Extra Snow.

----- ----- ----- Conditions Caveats ----- ------ ------

Mountain Crews Will Have Miles ’n Miles of Beautiful Corduroy, but…

Abundant, Rapidly Accumulating Snow is not necessarily easy
for Beginners or Intermediates. Tracks through New Snowfall can
create Uneven Forward Resistance factors as Skis or Board move
across the Snow that has arrived since Grooming was completed.

The Most Essential Safety Factor Is Absolute Speed Control.
Your “Snowplow” or “Hockey Stop” Braking Skills will be your
Best Friend. As soon as you sense Turning Resistance, STOP…
and re-set foot position for either directional or forward motions.

For Forward Motion...The best way to cope with Uneven Surfaces
is to maintain a Compact Low Posture, with a close Foot stance with
Skis together to form a more stable Platform underfoot.

------------------ End of Caveat -----------------

Snowfall Accumulation Patterns:

Too Much Snow? For Expert’s… NEVER!

For Experts who Love lots of fresh snow, there 2 types of Snow Drifting
features at Tremblant that we’re going to look at.

1) Localized Contour Drifting… The Pic above shows Localized Contour Drifting
that you can see looking along the line of Orange/Black Boundary Poles used
by Grooming Crews to mark the sides of the Groomed Surface. On the left of
the poles is never Groomed and the wind has carried Snow into the Mogul
Contours and not only filled them up, but also created extended drift lines
and Snow deposits here that are frequently Knee-Deep.

2) Sector Drifting…. The pic. Below shows the Nord, North Summit
Sectors Duncan(on left), and Lowell Thomas(on right). When the wind/snow
comes over the Summit from anywhere between South and North on the
Western Side(the side the sun sets on), virtually anything and/or everything
in this picture(the side the sun rises on) can get Drifted into at far greater
depths than the Statistical Snowfall.

For Experts at Tremblant...

The magic is the combinations that occur with BOTH...

…and that is TODAY!

Weather Notes:

Overcast with early temp at -11C, rising to -6C after lunch. Snow Flurries
and possibly measurable light snowfall as the day progresses. Light to Moderate
East winds, swinging around to Sou-West later on, but at low velocity, very
easy to deal with.

All-in-all, a very pleasant Snowy Winter day, perfect for Skiing/Boarding!

Conditions Notes:

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
